UNRaid kernel: traps: lsof[28497] general protection fault ip:

Recommended Posts

Hi,

On day 20 of my trial and so far really liking UNRaid. The only issue I have come across so far is as per the title. I have a very small setup at the moment as I am moving all my data around. Currently I have the following dockers

binhex-krusader

openvpn-as

tdarr_aio

I started with Tdarr so I could get the server converting all my stuff, openvpn is so my friend could log in and have a nose and help as he will be moving to UNRaid soon and Krusader was so I can move everything around.

For some reason Krusader can be running fine for hours moving stuff around but then suddenly it would drop in transfer speed until it goes "stalled" and then my logs get filled with the below:

I have tried searching and have come across various posts from test your memory (Will be doing tonight) or switching from one docker type to another. But nothing to explain why this is happening so I know what the problem is to resolve it properly.

Has anyone had this issue before or recommend steps I can take to try and narrow this down?

Thanks in Adavnce.

Not an answer to your query but it might be worth using WireGuard rather than OpenVPN-as as the way to allow secure access to your server from outside your LAN.   The WireGuard server is a standard part of Unraid (from 6.8.3 onwards) and has the advantage that it can be used even when the array is not started and when Docker is not running.

I'm having the exact same problem.

Krusader stalled and same error.

I started getting a some of these messages on one of my servers. They have appeared both on unraid 6.9.2 and 6.10.0-rc4 I noticed identical timestamps for traps lsof faults to messages related to an SMB share I have mounted through unassigned devices plugin. I switched to NFS and saw the same thing, identical timestamps like these:

Apr  9 09:12:26 server1 kernel: nfs: server server2 not responding, still trying
Apr  9 09:13:57 server1 kernel: nfs: server server2 not responding, still trying
Apr  9 09:25:16 server1 kernel: nfs: server server2 OK
Apr  9 09:25:16 server1 kernel: nfs: server server2 OK
Apr  9 09:25:16 server1 kernel: traps: lsof[28800] general protection fault ip:14789875068e sp:d00e994a5e9bf867 error:0 in libc-2.33.so[147898737000+15e000]

The errors are not isolated to these remote share events however. I see them over night every few minutes sometimes. They go away when I disable all dockers that write data to the array. The dockers that I have set up writing data to the array are set up to skip cache and write directly to disk by making use of the user0 path. Dockers writing to cache directly appear not to cause these errors.

I changed my RAM out this morning right before the above logs, so it does not appear to have been a RAM issue.

To give you an idea of the frequency:

Going to try unplugging the USB keyboard I had plugged in per this reddit user's experience:

https://www.reddit.com/r/unRAID/comments/ohakff/server_shutting_itself_down_at_least_once_a_day/

Update: Made no difference. Attempting changes to docker share access modes. (Again no difference)

I do not have unplugged usb keyboard and mouse, Krusader is not running or installed, read/write (slave) has been changed to simply Read/Write, memtest reported no errors.

The last thing to do is reimage or replace usb flash drive.

Hello,

I am seeing this problem as well when I am on 6.11.5, on one of my two unraids. If I go back to 6.10.3 the problem disappears and everything works fine. I have had this problem on all 6.11.X and I always had to roll back to 6.10.3.

When the problem arises, around 4 AM, all docker and VMs are missing on the dashboard. The server kind of works, but not completely. I can't even download Diagnostics, it's just stuck on collecting logs.
I also see the following in the logs which match the time pretty good,

Dec  1 03:46:31 unraid01 kernel: traps: lsof[20478] general protection fault ip:14710dae84ee sp:c1321d13210db561 error:0 in libc-2.36.so[14710dad0000+16b000]

I get similar issues since a few versions back, server starts to max the CPU then stuff like this gets spammed in log.

After a some time, it calms down and everything is back to normal. Seems to happens alteast once every day.

Ive upgraded most hardware in server, thinkig it was ram issue. But problem remains with new hardware aswell.

I got the message too, but only when backing up from Unraid to an SMB share

I am having the same issue upgrading to 6.11.X

lsof[18974] general protection fault ip:1481599b64ee sp:880eb02cb5db8960 error:0 in libc-2.36.so[14815999e000+16b000]

I can't even move between tabs after a bit, it just freezes up.

**EDIT:

So i recently upgraded to 6.11 - and i found a ton of things that were not updated on my server.  I have an Nvidia graphics card, and the driver was not updated to account for 6.11, and I also have a Dynamix Local Master plugin for SMB shares, and that was way out of date... it started up much smoother after i updated all the plugins and fixed the graphics card.  Something to check just in case.

I have the same issue (3 servers, all same behaviour), but cannot really identify the source - I migrated from 6.9 to 6.11 and simultaneously connected NFS share as main datastore for my VMs and Dockers (Unraid acts only as an application server for me, storage is elsewhere)...

My observation is that at this time period, remote file access is stalled - nothing seems to get through. When was using NFSv4 with remote locks, these locks were lost - effectively loosing file access forever and killing Unraid GUI into endless wait (maybe because of the lost connection to libvirt.img and docker.img?)... When switched to NFSv3 with local locks only, these protection faults still happen (mostly when some more intensive transfers happen), but with locks not being lost Unraid GUI will not freeze any more. But still, these dropouts are annoying.

And last but not least, what surprises me the most - process crashing that is being logged is lsof? why lsof, what is calling lsof at that time? cannot it be some plugin? or some stuff stuck from previous upgrades, my flash drives are quite old and all were updated from 6.9 to 6.11.x... why lsof??

All of a sudden all my shares disappeared.  Stopping array and starting array did not bring them back.  Rebooted the server restored the shares.  I did some searching and found a thread (sorry don't have the link) that recommended using the CA Tips and Tweaks plugin to set vm.dirty_background_ratio and vm.dirty_ratio to 1 and 2 respectively.  Been up for a few days now without losing shares or getting the seg faults.  Note:  after setting the aforementioned tweaks, I did need to perform a reboot.

Not sure if that will help anyone, but it appears to have helped me.  Will continue to monitor the logs and see if the message reappears.

I'm getting these as well periodically. Best I can tell is that they seem to happen when my backup share (over Tailscale) starts seeing some issues (possibly packet loss somewhere?) and "du" or "df" (can't remember) starts failing to that remote share. But once it happens there is no recovery - even when the remote Tailscale node recovers, which I can see from my laptop on my same home LAN. The main issue I start seeing is that my docker apps won't restart and throw an exception. The only way to recover Unraid is a reboot.

Yeah, I know the Tailscale container states that it is intended to provide remote access to Unraid only (not any gateway functionality).
