Power connectors to drive cage

Featured Replies

I have 5 in 3 drive cages. The rear panel has molex power connections and two SATA power connections. I know I don't have to use all of them. I will be using 5 7200rpm drives. They run about 6-7 amps. What power connections do I need to hook up? Will two molex connections work? Or should I try to use 3 molex? Is there any diference between the molex power connections and the SATA ones?

2 molex should be enough.

I've never seen one with that many.  What model is it?

My guess is that the fan won't run unless at least one of the molex plugs is plugged in.  The two SATA may cover all the drives.  Trial and error is really the only way to be sure...either that or look up the wiring diagram of the box.

Wow talk about your power redundancy there.

I wonder if you have to either have the (2) Satas or the (3) molexs to spin the fan.

As for the differences in plug styles I'd guess NO other than they have a different pin out, but they are still providing the same amount of power. The only real difference I could see in this is they might follow different traces on the circuit, but I'm sure they end up in the same place.

Yeah what is that thing? I see Jumpers on the top as well.

Don't know about the one pictured but mine is similar.  And as far as I can remember I can connect either the SATA power connectors or the PATA power connectors and get all functions - fan and drives powered.  I have two of them.

looks like a little piezo alarm beside those jumper points too

Is the fan replaceable?

On the one I posted at least - not easily.  You would have to take the entire back off of the unit it is all one piece of molded plastic.

Oh yea, it has an alarm bell on it that screeches when the drive temps go to high. It can be disabled. I've already taken off the black shroud and took out (to check out) the fan. Everything comes off very easily and just snaps in along with 4 screws. The fans look standard size and also have a standard connection. Easy to replace if need be. I'll be slapping this all together this weekend.
