Hitachi 7k300 -HDS723020BLA642 is it Advanced Format?

Featured Replies

Since this is one of Hitachi's newest drives I assumed it would be Advanced Format, but I don't see anything to backup this assumption. Is there a clear way of knowing? Do all manufacturers print a warning on the drive as Samsung and Seagate seem to do?

I am just trying to confirm how I should preclear this drive, from what I can tell the drive appears to NOT be an advanced format drive.

Based on the spec sheet, it is not an Advanced Format.  Surprising.

Other reviews confirm this as well.

Looks like the Hitachi TravelStar series drives are advanced format.

I guess you didn't know that the preclear will work properly with every drive, advanced format or not, by using the -A option. So, use the -A and that way you don't even need to care or worry about it being AF or not.

Yeah I was aware that it didn't break anything, but at same time I figured if I could confirm one way or the other I could format it the way the HDD manufacturer expects.

Well, AF drives should have the partition start on a 4k sector multiple for best performance. Non-AF drives can have the partition start on any sector. Using the -A option starts the partition on sector 64, a multiple of 4. So, use the -A or the 4k-Aligned option for any new drive and you eliminate the possibility of doing it wrong.

I would suspect it is an AF drive.
