Wireguard connection type for remote backups?

What connection type do you use for remote backups? What is your method?

 

I have a friend with an ESXi server where I'd like to send and store my backups on via rsync through Wireguard. I sent him an HDD already. I'm having him add it to his server to sit outside of his RAID array and spin up a VM for this instance. I have Wireguard running on my unRAID server. What would be a lightweight OS to run the Wireguard server on his end? What connection type is best?

 

The way I understand it, he would be running the Wireguard server and I'd be the client?

 

Anyone doing something similar?
