February 2, 201115 yr Would there be any benefits backing up the parity drive? If so how would this be done?
February 2, 201115 yr There are no benefits. In fact, you would be safer if you backed up each data drive. If you do a few searches you will find this has been repeatedly asked and answered with much discussion as to why. Peter
February 2, 201115 yr The parity disk is constantly updated as writes occur to the array. A backup would be immediately useless the instant the next write to the array occurred. There is a miabelief the the parity disk is able to recover a failed disk. This is not true. It is the parity disk in combination with each and every other disk in the array that are needed to recover a failed disk. No one disk is any more important than another to perform the restore.
