Stay away from Realtek rtl8111 for pfsense/opnsense

Hi everybody,

I just wanted to warm people that this chip isn't currently supported by pfSense/opnsense.

I bought this DUAL NIC: https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07TD58PBQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And nor pfSense neither opnsense could detect it.

I finally managed to install pfSense using their v2.5-beta which obviously includes the required drivers. (I didn't find a beta/futur version for OPNsense. Maybe they don't propose any ?)

And to top it all, it worked as our firewall/router for some days, then suddently, as we were watching tv, one of the 2 ports died. It still can get a physical link, but doesn't want to carry traffic anymore. I've returned it and bought a dual Intel NIC. More expensive but hopefully more reliable.

Happy new year,

I had just ordered https://www.amazon.com/Ziyituod-Ethernet-Interface-Converter-1000Mbps/dp/B07R8KKD33/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Ziyituod&qid=1610481250&sr=8-2 which I think is the same card. Cancelled when I saw your post here. Thankfully I saw your post within actual minutes of placing the order. I don't know what pfsense even is because I'm a newbie but I do know I would prefer maximum compatibility with everything. Would you mind telling me what intel NIC you went with instead?

I was looking at this: https://www.amazon.com/10Gtek-Gigabit-Ethernet-Converged-Network/dp/B01LXTF48X/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=dual+intel+nic&qid=1610481374&sr=8-3

My router supports link aggregation and I think I would like to use it and I don't know if it will work with unraid.

Hello, That's exactly the intel I bought !

@Ford Prefect This intel was not detected by opnsense too but it was by pfsense even with the pfsense stable version, this time.

Anyway I should receive today a nuc QOTOM that I've ordered on aliexpress/alibaba. I think it's better to have a dedicated device to run the firewall.

...actually I was referring to@Hydranmenace above, asking for a card supported in unraid.

I have one of these little "pfsense appliances", you are referring to as well in my holiday home.
It has 6x I-211 NiCs working well with unraid and hosting an opnsense VM and smarthome dockers (8GB, I5-6100 with 1TB NVMe and a single SATA SSD in the array)...like it a lot.
