Drives from one unRAID to another

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

So I'm in the process of re-building my unRAID server, and created a backup server.

Now I was thinking, once I rebuild my main server, can I just take out the drives from the backup server, and mount them with unassigned and copy from drive to share?

That will be quicker than going via a network right?

Yes you can do that. Whether it will be faster than network depends since network may be as fast as writes to the parity array anyway. If you wait and assign parity after initial transfer then those writes will be at single disk speed instead of the slower parity update speed.

That is all assuming you are transferring directly between the 2 servers and not with some other computer in the middle of the transfer such as using Windows File Explorer or something to do the transfer.

trurl, is there anything that I should be considering before I just move the drives from my old machine to the next, like drive order? I did not have any RAID configuration, I built my old machine so long ago, I really don't remember much other than I have 5 disks, 4 data, one parity.

Really appreciate your help in this.

Don't know why you posted to this old thread when it doesn't seem to be related to what you are doing in your other thread. Looks like you got replies over there.
