Would this build work? Total n00b here...

yep it would

motherboard would be expandable to max. 16 drives if the x16 slot will take a sas/sata controller

cpu is maybe a bit overkill depending what you want to do with it ...

powersupply and case will need upgrade once you are thinking of getting more then 6 disks

but the deal seems OK

Thanks for the response!  I am just looking for a cheap solution with all the parts selected and I know they will work.  First time building a machine here...  Why do you think the case can only hold 6?  Looks like a ton of bays?

quick look at the case says me maximum 11 disks without fancy things

but there is not much cooling for them provided in the case

so i think you will first need to add a fan in the front to cool the 6  x 3.5 bays

then 2 x 3.5 will have no  or very limited air flow as there is no possibility for a fan

and 4 x 5.25 bays which with 5 in 3s  fills up and leaves you with one bay left...

so it will never host the max of your motherboard

powersupply has also 2 12v rails so is not optimal for many disks

My setup was from one of these deals way back when, works great but definitely get some cooling in the front.. Without it my drives were running at around 50-60 degrees C which of course isn't very good for them.. after I added a fan and got some airflow through? All under 30ºC now.
