Sanity check: Server upgrade parts

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've been using unraid for about 6 months now on old, sketchy hardware I had around. Recently I've been having stability problems with the server suffering a kernel panic 2-3 times a week. I think it is time to upgrade the guts of the system and wanted to get a second opinion on whether the parts make sense. For one thing, I believe I read that 10th gen intel will need Unraid 6.9? I'm on 6.8.3 right now.

I use unraid as a file server, plex server, and newsgroup and torrent downloader. I'd also like to run a few other dockers like a security cam recorder like shinobi and homeassistant.io. My choice of cpu is on the lower side (looking for lower idle power) so I don't suppose VM performance will be great.

Option 1: Intel

CPU: Core i3-10100 3.6 GHz (4c/8t) (with integrated graphics)

Mobo: ASRock B460 Phantom Gaming 4

RAM: G.Skill Aegis 2x8GB DDR4-3000

Option 2: AMD

CPU: Ryzen 3 3200G 3.6 GHz (with integrated graphics)

Mobo: ASRock B450 Pro4

RAM: G.Skill Aegis 2x8GB DDR4-3000

These parts would replace the CPU, mobo, and graphics card in my current system:

CPU: Intel Xeon x5450

Mobo: ASRock P43Twins1600

RAM: 2x4GB DDR3

Graphics: Asus GT240 (have unplugged it since a few days ago to see if it helped system stability)
