First Build (with existing parts)

Featured Replies

HI All,

This is my first build, and I'm definitely new to this. I'm a video editor and need reasonably fast (not RED RAW footage, but 4k footage) scratch disks to edit from, and lots of backup storage for projects I don't work on but still would like access to.

I'm repurposing some hardware for this and want to make sure my reasoning is right before starting!

Existing gear:

Intel Core i9-9900K

Crucial Ballistix Tactical 64 GB (non-ECC)

GIGABYTE Z390 DESIGNARE + Thunderbolt 3 PCI card

Sapphire 11265-05-20G Radeon Pulse RX 580 8GB

CORSAIR 300R ATX-Mid

Samsung 970 EVO Plus Series - 500GB PCIe NVMe

Some random SSDs and HHDs that'll I need to upgrade over time

Additional gear and questions:

I think investing in a better case makes sense as I want to easily add HHDs as my needs grow. The Fractal R5 seems popular around here?

I think a 10GBe card is required to connect to the server with decent speed right? I can't use thunderbolt 3 to connect to it from my Macbook Pro can I?

Will the Radeon help my workflow? Copying media from SDs to HHDs, and then often transcoding them from H.265 to Apple ProRes...can I even do that transcoding on and UnRaid system or do I need to set up a VM to do that?

Much obliged group, thanks for helping a newbie out 😀
