Advice on choice of UPS

Featured Replies

I recently built an Unraid server. In fact, it's my first server of any kind. It's a pretty simple build. As of right now it only has three hard drives and an SSD, a processor and some memory. There is no GPU. My plan is to expand it with more drives in the future.

My next step is to buy a UPS. I have never done that before and I feel kind of lost. What should I buy? I doubt my Unraid build needs a lot of power. I'm looking for a UPS that is relatively cheap and that can sustain the server until it can safely power down. I don't need to have the server up during an extended power outage. I rarely have power outages where I live but they do happen from time to time. A requirement is for the UPS to be compatible with the UPS features that are built into Unraid.

I've been looking at the following:

APC Back-Ups CI 300W 500VA or the APC Back-Ups 700VA

Then there are other manufacturers.  Such as:

Bluewalker UPS VI 800VA 480W or the cheaper one (I don't know why it's cheaper, they seem the same to me) BlueWalker PowerWalker UPS VI 800 SCL

There's more of Bluewalker/Powerwalker here.

I seem to get more for the same price if I buy the Bluewalker/Powerwalker UPS instead of APC, but maybe there is difference in quality between the brands?

Are any of the UPS I have linked appropriate for my needs? Can they all automatically shut down while connected to an Unrad server?  Are there better ones out there? I live in Sweden so not everything might be available to me.

I'd just plan for the future and go with the largest capacity UPS that you can afford to get without being unreasonably priced.  You can never have too much power, only too little.  If you ever expand your hardware or want to be able to provide backup power to more devices you may find yourself needing to buy another UPS when you could have just bought a larger one in the first place.

Some people here have used Bluewalker with no complaints. I like CyberPower but they do not seem to be globally available.  APC is usually overpriced but is a fine brand.  All will work with Unraid.
