Why is it a thing? Or maybe why is it still a thing?

why would I stream a film to my tv rather than my tv or blu ray player or raspberry pi etc playing the file/film from the server

    I assume you mean transcode instead of encode.

     

    If the device you are streaming to (and the network you are streaming on) can handle the stream without transcoding then no need to transcode.

     

    But, some devices may not be able to handle the stream, and if you are streaming over the internet then maybe the network can't handle it either.
