RAID Accidents and Solutions

I just went through a super long & Super painful process of migrating my UnRAID Server from an old Desktop computer to an HP ProLiant DL380P G8 with a P420i RAID controller.

 

Having done some minor review, I found that a common way to implement UnRAID with this hardware is to create a separate RAID0 array for each drive that I'm using.

 

DO NOT DO THIS!

 

When you add these disks to the Logical array, it overwrites your Partition table.

Remember that your P420i card might need to have updated Firmware to support enabling HBA mode.

 

After my mistakes, I was able to see all of my original drives in UnRAID again, but they were all marked as Unable to Mount: Unsupported Partition Format.

 

I was eventually able to recover the drives by using testdisk (which is available in the nerdpack) from a terminal.  Simply do a scan, and mark the partitions as primary on each disk.  Reboot the server, and the disks should mount again properly.

 

I just wanted to share some lessons learned from this all night headache, in trying to save my data!
