Drive CPU Core Allocation for VMs RAID Array and Plex Server

Featured Replies

Hi Guys & Gals,

I'm setting up my Ureal Unraid machine. I've never setup VM's before so I don't know how to allocate my drives or CPU cores.

CPU:

Intel Core i9-10940x 14 cores

Drives:

3 x 2TB NVMe

6 X 2TB Mechanical
1 x 1TB SATA SSD (Yet to be installed, being cannibalized from PC I'm using now)

Intended Unraid Usage:

1 x VM  for Dad (Most core allocation as possible)

1 x VM for son (Gaming) 500 Gb local storage

1 x VM for daughter (YouToob Tik Tock Netflix) 500 Gb local storage

1 x Plex server

Obviously I would use one 2TB mechanical for parity and five 2TB for data. But what would be the best way to utilize the three NVMe's? One as cache for the RAID array. Can I allocate one entire NVMe to my VM and split the third VM between my son and daughters VMs?

CPU Core Allocation

How should I pin CPU cores?. 2 Cores for Unraid and all 3 VMs on the remaining 12 cores?. Or should I pin 4 cores to each VM?. Can I set it so VM 1 Dad gets 12 cores when the kids aren't using their VMs?
