Intel SAS expander help!

Featured Replies

Looking for some insight or ideas on this issue. I have an old Avamar M1200 gen4s. It is an Intel R2312 chassis with an Intel S2600GL server board. The way it was configured was the backplane has 3 sff-8087 ports for the 12 drives. 3 sff-8087 to sff-8087 cables going to an Intel RES2SV240 SAS expander. The backplane cables take up the first 3 ports on the expander and the last 2 ports go from the expander to a Intel integrated raid card.

I need a HBA and not a raid card so I removed the raid card and and slotted a LSI 9211-8i (IT mode) into the riser and ran the 2 sff-8087 cables to the HBA from the expander. Expander or drives are not showing up in HBA bios under the SAS topology. The HBA has the most up to date firmware.

So far I have tried:

Moving PCI slots, moving mini sas ports on both HBA and expander, removing drives, trying different drives, trying different mini sas cables, powering expander from molex instead of PCI, updating motherboard bios, and tried another intel expander.

The only way I can see the drives is if I bypass the expander and go straight from the backplane to the HBA leaving 4 drives with no connection.

Anybody have any ideas to try?

Looks like a weird one, please post diagnostics with the expander connected to the HBA.
