February 11, 201115 yr I am new to unRAID and very inexperienced, it's only thanks to all the great people here that I could even get my system up and running I just built a new system running 4.7 --I precleared and added my first drive. I then created a MOVIES user share and copied my data on this drive from my windows machine over the LAN, it transferred at about 20MB/s which I thought was OK but slow. I am having issues accessing this share from my windows machine. I can access the web interface and unMENU flawlessly, but when I am navigating the share in windows explorer it will take forever to open a folder and it hangs when I try to open one of the movies. As I said I am very inexperienced and could be overlooking something simple, let me know if there is any suggestions for what I can do syslog-2011-02-11.txt
February 11, 201115 yr Author Playing around I found that I can't open anything from the user share on windows explorer-- even when I tried to open a picture the picture viewer opened and just said loading.... I am also getting the error Can't Access \\tower somewhat often through windows explorer If I go to the file manager through unMENU I can open the same pictures no problem and don't experience any delays navigating the file structure
February 11, 201115 yr Two problems with you system. 1. You are using Samsung F4 - have you upgraded the firmware on this one as there is a potential for "silent" data corruption. Read more in the HD section regarding these drives. Also this drive will require a "special" way of preclearing to insure a"faster" performance. 2. Your network problems are due to the fact that your motherboard uses Atheros based LAN controller - and these do not work well (at least for now). Only solution is to disable the onboard LAN in the BIOS and use an additional gigabit Intel (or Realtek) based PCI or PCIe controller. It also appears that the onboard LAN is only 100 Mbps and I am not sure how you achieved the 20 MBytes /s for your data transfer.
February 11, 201115 yr Author Thanks for the tips, I sure wish I would have picked up on these issues before. I will work on those changes today
February 11, 201115 yr Author Also this drive will require a "special" way of preclearing to insure a"faster" performance. By this do you mean preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdX instead of preclear_disk.sh /dev/sdX
February 12, 201115 yr Author That did the trick-- many thanks for the help. This is great, now time to upgrade!
