My first unraid system

Featured Replies

Hi,
I'm starting my first unraid system.

These are my requirements so far

  • Run 24x7 so low power (watts) consumption would be very nice.
  • Download tools for movies and series (torrent / nzb / vpn / SpotWeb)
  • Home Assistant
  • Pi-Hole
  • Home Guard
  • Windows server 2019 core as domain controller and DNS
  • Grifana dashboard

Hardware

Case : Fractal design node 804

Motherboard : Supermicro A1SRM-2758F  Supermicro X11SCL-F

CPU : Intel I3-9100 or I3-9100F

Memory : 4x 16GB ECC DDR4 DDR3 or 4x 8GB ECC DDR3

Disks : Don't know yet, leaning towards SSD

This is what i learned and found useful so far. Maybe there will be more but i don't know yet.
Tips are very much appreciated.

Later there will be a bigger (more memory and cpu power) unraid system with lots of TB's off storage running my plex server and maybe more.

On facebook i posted the same question and someone doesn't agree with the motherboard choice.
Hoping to get more response from this side of the community

New hardware reconmendation

I'm not sure on the Atom.  I'm sure there are people that have used one for Unraid but it's a very low power processor (benchmark, not power consumption).  I'm not sure how easy it would be to overload the CPU with tasks. And considering you want at least one VM I have a feeling that it would not be a good CPU for your usage.

I agree too, but if you got in good price, then you could try does it could fit your requirement.

One week ago, I try change a 2 bay QNAP (J1900 7x24) from QTS to Unraid, the reason was it always disk spinup and generate sound. Now, this new setup replace another J1900 ( Camera recording ) and Pi ( Homeassistant ).

1 bay change to SSD and spinner disk on other bay, all VM+docker in SSD.

The cost was Unraid license, I save around 30w and got 97% time silent, but drawback was once heavy CPU/Disk loading, i.e. extra file access in or out then Camera recording will goes down. I also lost snapshot, versioning, RAID 1 redundancy which provide by QTS.

It host

  • Windows 10 VM ( Camera recording and NTP )
  • HASSIO VM
  • Pimpmylog docker
  • Wireshark docker
  • Rsync backup service
  • Network UPS

I just came to another configuration option

New motherboard Supermicro X11SCL-F with an Intel I3-9100 or an Intel I3-9100F CPU

Better a lot, in my opinion, don't go with "F" CPU because you may need plug-in GPU for troubleshoot, and I will go with i5-9400 ( 6-core) with motherboard have PL1 and PL2 power management support.  ( best with ITX so you can minimize its footprint when need )

With suitable setting, the power usage for high TDP CPU could be low too, below is my desktop 9700K with ITX case in generic usage.

So you proposal is from Micro ATX to Micro ITX with reason lower power consumption
And I3 to I5 moren cores but power consumption stays the same?

You are making it to difficult for me to choose.
DDR4 DIMM or DDR4 SO DIMM. I think SO is move expense and has no extra value for my unraid system.
Is M2 nice to have in my config? Why should i choose M2 instead of SSD for cache?

Please see my attached.
I like to stay with supermicro because of the IPMI and my compatibility with other systems in my home.

Not for power consumption, just for furture if you want minimize its size and you don't need two PCIe slot.

Really not much different if you control ( limit, dynamic control ) it not run in high clock rate, 6 core have flexibility.

Thanks for the size tip, this also makes the case a little cheaper.
How can i limit a CPU to just use 50% of the Mhz. I guess that is what you mean with limit clock rate?

DDR4 DIMM or DDR4 SO DIMM

The price different should be less.

Anyway, if power usage is importance, then PL1 PL2 support must need with high TDP CPU.

What is the different of underclock / undervolt different with PL1 PL2 ? Below is example, I set PL1 be 35w and 10s turbo max , then system with high load will draw 100w in 10s then automatic limit to 35w only. The advantage was it have a 10s turbo to complete a short task, otherwise, it limit its power usage.

These are settings you did in the BIOS of your CPU?
Are you able to share a screenshot? This is pretty neat stuff for me.
I'm just a windows noob ;)

From last PIC, you could found I set it in BIOS with 65w PL1 with 28s turbo, but my OS was Windows so I can change what I like in software ( Intel extreme tuning utility ). If run with Unraid, then you only can preset it in BIOS.

Which tool did you use for power consumption measurement? Intel Extreme Tuning utility?
Should this be mentioned in the manual of the motherboard? dynamic power control?

Yes

Yes, but you need read carefully for example, MBD-X11SCL-F haven't mention that.

Hmm, i think i'm going for the I3 to be safe.
I am absolutely not familiar with over/under clocking CPU's so i would rather be safe than sorry.

That's an expensive board. Almost 300 EURO. The boards i showed you are around 175 EURO

Just an example, my desktop was Asrock ITX Z390, 130USD.

OK thank you.
I'm going for the I3. Just have to choose a ITX motherboard. If you have a suggestion i would like to know.

Thank you for all your tips and answers.

No problem of i3, just share some experiences for you. In fact, you already list out those ITX board

MBD-X11SCV-Q no IPMI but have PL1, PL2, Amazon 230 USD

MBD-X11SCL-IF IPMI should be no PL1,PL2, Amazon 198 USD

Any reconmendations on the memory?
Is 32GB enough or should i use 64gb

Still having doubt for the config
a. ESXi with 1VM unraid and1 VM Server 2019 core
b. Unraid with VM

Mine almost all are Crucial, 2400 or 2666

e.g.

CT16G4DFD8266

CT16G4SFD824A

I use Proxmox to host 2 Unraid and Windows, but after reduce to 1 Unarid then host all other stuff under it.

So your tip is use UNRAID and don't virtualise the unraid

Yes, if no special reason.
