1TB Drives

Featured Replies

Will the Unraid OS support the 1TB drives out there that are now starting to drop in price and are near $0.25 per gig.....

I'm running 2 currently; no problems. Western Digital 1TB drives, one as parity, one as data.

Probably more of a controller issue. If your controller won't see the TB, unRAID won't.

I just got my two servers in today from my vendor.

6 Hitachi 1TB drives each.  I started one up with the Basic version since my boss isn't here at the moment to buy the two Pro versions yet.  Maybe later today.  We'll have six 1TB drives running 24x7 in each server.  :)

The software recognizes them all just fine in the Devices section, I just can't select them all yet.

Interesting.  UnRaid tends to attract the home user since that is where most of the features (and drawbacks) are targeted.  Do you mind sharing the type of application you intend to use UnRaid for?

One box will be used for general "trash" storage for our department (Information Services) since we are constantly running out of space on various things we can put things there.

The other box's intended use is for long term storage for video archiving.  Well, I say Long Term, but it will be anywhere from a rotating 30 day to 90 day storage of 24x7 video feeds.  I really really really hope it works the way I want it to :)

The idea of being able to pop out a drive and replace with a bigger (they have bigger than 1TB yet?  Haha ) drive is fantastic.  That and being able to add more hard drives to the storage "pool" without a lot of fuss.  We do everything RAID 5 now but it has it's own disadvantages too.  We're really excited about trying out unRAID and since it's Linux based I'm hoping it stays stable enough for us in this application.  I don't doubt we're going to be using it beyond maybe it's original intentions but a system like this seems like just what the Doctor ordered.

Oh, and I put in the order for my registration about 30 minutes ago. :)

There have been fewer users of unRaid for business storage than home usage. I expect this will change now that some security is in place.  (I am assuming you are enabling security)

The ability to add drives of any size is a huge advantage.  You might have to wait a few months before you see drives bigger than 1TB available for 25 cents per gig..  (I'm not even sure if I've seen preliminary announcements of any drives larger than 1TB... 1TB is getting up there for most users)

Biggest issue most people have is getting stable hardware... but you get that with raid5 too.  Sounds like you are past that hurdle if you are booting and seeing the drives.

Have fun.  You can never have enough disk storage space in a data center.  10 TB between your new servers will certainly help. You can even pop in a few older 200, 300, 400, or 500 gig drives to fill in a few more slots and gain another TB or so until the 2TB drives are announced.

Sorry to dig up an old topic, but I thought some might be interested in how things have been going with this.

Both servers have been up and running *almost* 24/7 since October with ZERO issues whatsoever (I had to physically move one once).  I had a slight issue I had to figure out with splitting across drives because my split-level was wrong so when my first 1TB drive filled up it stopped... but anyway.  I've not had to reboot either box.  No lockups, no shares disappearing, no problems I see other people listing so I'm a very very satisfied customer.  I have not upgraded anything past 4.2.1 because at the moment "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Both servers are accessed daily, multiple times per day.  One gets video data dumped to it at noon each day, the other has various backups going to it and just accessed by our department moving files around.  One setting that got turned off as soon as I started this project was that I do NOT power down hard drives.  I think it's a mistake to have drives power down in a server setting.  You never know if the next time it's supposed to power up might be the time it doesn't. :)

Most of my drives spin 24x7 also.

However the appeal of unraid was that for my archival media and backups,

the drives could be spun down until needed because of the infrequent use.

Although I do find it frustrating at times accessing the server, waiting for the drive to spin up. LOL.

Still a few watts saved, is a few watts earned for later. ;-)
