Choosing a motherboard for two VMs on the Z590

Good day!

Friends, which of the motherboards would you recommend to buy?

1. Z590 VISION G

2. Z590 AORUS ULTRA

Basically, I want an intel platform, since there is a built-in graphic editor and it helps well in plex transcoding.

In general, it is supposed to use two VMs, with nVidia 1660Ti and nVidia 1060 6Gb video cards.

It is also desirable to transfer m2 NVMe to each VM.

The Gigabyte brand is preferable because you can choose a video adapter in bios.

Thank!

You should go with the Ultra, at least based on the block diagram. That way both GPUs get an x8 link to the CPU. Ultimately that will depend on the IOMMU groupings. I’m about to do some testing with an 11700K and a Z590 Master soon. I’ll let you know how it goes. The Master and the Ultra are very similar.

Good day! Thank you very much for your time. As far as I understand, for Ultra, both graphics cards will be in the same IOMMU group and you will need to enable the ACS patch. I wonder how stable the system will be with ACS turned on. In any case, write about your experience, thanks!

I actually ended up getting the Ultra and an 11600K. The IOMMU groupings are pretty good. I have two GPUs and two NVME drives and everything has it's own group. This was with no ACS overrides.

Thank you very much for the helpful information. A small question, video card connected this way?
If so, then this is just an excellent motherboard for Intel processors.

I got my hands on an ROG Maximus XIII Hero. It's a little more flexible with the CPU lanes. I have it running x8/x4/x4 (m.2). Both GPUs still have their own group and both m.2 drives still get their own group. I'm OK with the second GPU getting 4 lanes because it's only going to be used for Plex transcoding.

@jwoolen

I appreciate this thread since it seems like its the first info I've seen about the iommu groups on rocketlake.

Just to confirm, you do not have ACS override options enabled, is that correct? (In other words, these are the true groups?)

If so then Intel has finally fixed the broken ACS separation on the root ports. While rocketlake has a lukewarm response to a lot of people, this and the increased lanes for the DMI and m.2 slots make it much improved platform for passthrough.

Link to post

It doesn’t really matter how much lanes you got for your gpu. As long as it is 4.0x4 ( or 3.0x8 )minimum you are fine anyways.. it has been tested a lot, more lanes will give you just 1-2% more performance. What’s important though, is that the gpu is directly attached to the cpu, not via a chipset or the dmi...
