Lost in motherboard land

Featured Replies

I'm a bit lost in the world of motherboards, theres so many and the last time I built a PC was around 5 years ago  :-[ so I'm well out of my depth. If I can tell you what I require can someone please point me in the general direction.

I will mainly be using my unraid system for downloading with Sabnzbd and then playing all my files over my network to my popcorn hour and audio other devices. I want it to the brain for my entertainment in my house ;D

As my budget permits another 2 popcorn boxes will be added.

I've picked the Cooler Master Centurion 590 case and will be starting with 3 drives and as needed will add new drives.

Will I stick with the suggestion made in Raj's design of the BIOSTAR TA785G3HD or do I need something else. I'm in Ireland so some boards seem harder to come by.

Sorry just checked skinflint.co.uk and there no where is stocking the BIOSTAR TA785G3HD

Many thanks

I would suggest looking through the unRAID compulsive design board and see what's available in your part of the world. At least you will be purchasing one that at least one other unRAID user is using.

Or you could find a board that is available to you and like. Then search these forums if anyone else has used it before.

I believe Supermicro boards are largely unavailable in Europe, so I'll skip those recommendations.  Look for the Biostar A760G M2+.  It is a bit of an old board, and it has been discontinued by the manufacturer, so I won't be surprised if you can't find one.  Still, it is worth looking for.

might depend on European country, just bought one in the Netherlands though i had to change shop to one that actually had stock. the first shop  didn't receive the MB in time. Possibly stocks are getting low?

here is a list from German price-watch http://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/a558208.html

other countries probably have their own pricewatches.

Righto doin some looking and found 2 Biostar A760G M2+ on ebay.com The lising says they wont ship international but I've sent a message to both sellers asking would they make an exception. Worse case they say no.

Those supermicro boards seem bit on the expensive side if I'm honest but they must be the dogs danglies. Think i'll stick with something a little cheaper for my fist build.

Thanks a mil queeg for finding those, they all seem very similar to my eyes, I hate to ask but which would be the pick of the bunch ?

Yes, they are very similar.  I'm inclined to go with the cheapest - but that's me.  Some of those are on the hardware compatibility list, but I believe any of them would work fine.  Some use ddr2, others ddr3.  Do you have any ram sitting around that could be used?  That might make a difference.

The reason I'm currently using a Biostar A760g M2+ is because I wanted a small board to fit into my small case.  I had an Asus before.  Price dictates a lot to me.  A decent budget motherboard is fine.  Spending more for high performance won't have any effect.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, unfortunately I have no spare bits lying around expect the odd harddrive and some cables. Haven't built a machine in years and the first and last one I did built I sold to a friend of mine a year or so ago. Gone down the laptop route as it suits me needs better.

I've seen your own case that you modded that would be ideal for me as 10 drives to me would be alot but considering I have nothing lying around I felt I may as well go for the Centriun 590 which seems to the fan favorite, but if something like yours was available to buy as is I would jump on it.

I just got on reply for the first seller no go on shipping to Ireland :(  gonna have a gander through your list again queeg and try pick a back up just incase the other seller turns me down aswell.
