Unable to read files on unRAID server from Windows 7 [SOLVED]

Featured Replies

Brand new unRAID user.  Still using unRAID v4.7 Basic; reg key for Pro on order but not received yet.

I installed SageTV v7 on a Windows 7 PC for my wife for this past Christmas, and in the 6 weeks or so since then she has filled up the 1TB drive on the SageTV server with recorded movies (all of which are, of course, sacred and must be kept forever). And she's thirsting for more storage.

So I built an UNRAID server for her to fill up with films. The build went smoothly, installing UNRAID was straightforward, and everything looked good -- until I actually tried to copy a SageTV recording to the UNRAID server and play it from there.

The first problem is that when I scan my import directories (which include //TOWER/disk2 on my UNRAID box), it doesn't always import the files which are actually in that directory. Most of the time (~75%), the files show up, but not always. Secondly, even if the file shows up, sometimes it is listed as zero bytes. Other times the correct file size shows up.

The big problem, though, is that when I actually try to play the file (either directly on the SageTV server or via the HD300 extender at the TV), the SageTV UI locks up for a couple of minutes and then I get a PlaybackException saying "error accessing the filesystem."

I posted this problem on the SageTV forums, and at the suggestion of another SageTV user, I tried to play the same file from the unRAID share using VLC.  The result:  VLC took about 2 minutes, then timed out with a "file read error" -- more or less the same behaviour that SageTV showed.  That tells me that this is probably an unRAID issue (most likely a configuration issue, since I am such a newbie), not a SageTV issue.

Here are the basics of my setup:

SageTV server:

Gateway DX4320

4GB RAM

1 TB HDD

Windows 7 Home Premium

SageTV running as a service, logged on with user/password (not LocalSystem)

Comcast STB and HD PVR for capture

UNRAID server:

SuperMicro SC743i 4U case/650W PSU

ASUS M4A78LT-M LE m/b

AMD Sempron 140 CPU

2GB RAM

2TB WD Caviar Green parity drive

2 x 1.5TB WD Caviar Green data drives

UNRAID v4.7 Basic

I am guessing that this is either a permissions issue or a SAMBA configuration issue, but I really don't know what to try next. Any advice anyone can offer will be much appreciated.

You have Asus M4A78LT-M LE and if you search here you will find that this is a motherboard to stay away from due to the fact that it uses Atheres chip for the LAN controller and they do not work well in Unraid. The solution is to disable the onboard NIC and add a PCIe or PCI Intel (or Realtek) based add-on card.

Thanks very much, bcbgboy13.

I picked up a Netgear GA311 NIC, installed it and disabled the onboard Atheros NIC:  problem solved.

I wanted to tag a thank you onto this SOLVED post, I've been beating my head against a wall for oh about a wek over this bloody issue. never crossed my mind it was the LAN card until oh 10mins ago. I'd been asusming SAMBA etc as had the original poster.
