Silly GPU passthrough question

Featured Replies

So assuming I use a dedicated GPU (something like a GTX1060 etc) and I wanted to passthrough to a VM for some light gaming, can I also use it for a Plex docker transcoding card? Or once it gets passed through to a VM is that it? Just wondering if it's possible to have it be used by a wide array of apps or if it's a 'one and done' situation?

Probs a stupid question, but just trying to ensure I have hardware compatibility for what I want to achieve as never used unraid before. Thanks.

Gday Yekul,

From what i have gathered, it is something like this.

VM's when active will take the entire resource and thus cannot be shared.

Docker itsself takes an entire resource and thus cannot be shared, the containers within docker can all use the gpu at the same time.

So you either dedicate it to an active VM or the Docker.

SpaceInvader has some video's on youtube detailing this and also shows same container dockers one configured with and the other without passthrough, cpu pinning / isolation and the likes. Meaning, if you do not use your VM with the GPU passthrough and turn it off, you can turn off the containers that don't use the GPU and turn on the containers with the GPU enabled without losing internal progress.

Hope this helps.
