Troubleshooting - Unraid performance while torrenting

Featured Replies

I need some assistance with system performance. I've recently upgraded to 1gig symmetrical connection and have discovered some read/write performance issues.

When torrenting for example I can download at a steady 500mbps for about 5-10 minutes, afterwards I get drops and spikes in my speed. I go from 500 to 0 and back up every 30-45 seconds.

The I/O wait doesn't drop with the network related drops. (Sits at about 30-60%)

Once this starts happening my array and drive responsiveness also drops to crazy poor levels.

  • Copying to the Array from my desktop is 5-10 MB/s
  • Copying from the Array to the cache drive is also 5-10 MB/s
  • Copying onto and off the cache drive works as normal

Trying to do a copy shows similar quality results, even copying from the cache drive to the array.

Currently I am not using a cache drive for my primary share that qBitTorrent is writing to.

From what it looks like to me is that I can write to the drive for 5-10 minutes before some buffer somewhere gets overwhelmed, afterwards the system comes to a screeching halt. Problem is, I can't identify what and where.

I've uploaded my Anon Diags

Edit: From the sound of things looks like I need a cache drive setup. I have a 480 GB I am setting up today and going to see if that helps

If array is torrent destination then poor performance is normal. A low end SSD even will perform better then any mechanical disk.

I am not torrent download under Unraid, I use single NVMe for OS and torrent, previous use low/mid grade separate SSD.

I've got torrents downloading to a unassigned HDD, extracted video is copied to array.

Never had any negative performance effects from running torrents this way.

This includes copies. I setup a 480GB SSD for caching currently under 50% full and a copy in the array to the cache is copying at 5-15MB/s.
The whole system is locking up during the copy as well. I/O waits exceeding 90% CPU usage.

Issue was the lack of DRAM in the SSD I had in the machine.

After upgrading to a better SSD my issues have been resolved.

Sound good of that, my NVMe was DRAMless, it perform better then mid grade SATA SSD.
