February 14, 201115 yr As a new user, trying to find information on addons, software and user customizations is tough as heck. I have used many different forum supported software packages and this one is very lacking on orginization. The guys developing these customization are doing great work, but they too must have a hard time keeping track of user question when they are scattered to the winds. Just some thoughts... Keep everything the same but within the User Customization forum, Set sub forums for the most used packages. In those, the developer(s) can easily get information out to the users and users know just where to look for info. Less used/newer packages can start threads normally in the existing forum, but should use a posting rule on the subject (ie. Package/Script/Tweak/How To: Name) Lime Technology - unRAID Server Community General User Customizations unMenu (sticky) FAQ (sticky) New Version Released! Help, unMENU won't start!! PreClear.sh (sticky) Post Results Here When to run preclear? basics? Transmission (Sticky) Beta Testers Needed Can't get this working!! ZOMG! myMain (Sticky) Now Integrated into unMENU Pics not loading, tried EVERYTHING!! AirVideo (Sticky) Installation Guide Newb question, working on Android? February 14, 201115 yr I think this is a good idea, but how would one decide which add-ons deserve a sub-forum and which don't? Number of downloads, maybe?
February 14, 201115 yr I guess based on usage aka replies, However with one script does it make sense to have its own sub forum if all questions can be answered from a long running script? I could see maybe if there was several scripts of the same type like pre_clear, but I'm sure even Joel L would say stop using an old and use the newest. Or maybe if there are several different questions that maybe would warrant its own post opposed to a simple reply. I think it would be easier to read through your own question and get an answer, but I think the advantage of having one long running thread people might get lazy and not read through it answering their already answered question. Man I think I just rambled on there.

Your thoughts are good, but the problem is, this all requires people, volunteers such as yourself. We have started a number of things in the past, but they usually always fall behind unless there are one or more active contributors to keep them up-to-date. I imagine you have seen the UnRAID Add Ons wiki page, which is a good example of a page that has fallen behind. It was designed to be the catalog for all unRAID addon packages, projects, and scripts, but there is a lot missing. For example, Transmission has not been added yet. I've been really happy to see greater Wiki participation lately, and with all of the new users coming to unRAID, I'm hopeful to see more users willing to jump in and help out, give back to our little community. It would be great to have one or more users 'adopt' each of the sections or even sub-sections of the unRAID wiki, and for these adopters to maintain that section. unMenu (sticky) FAQ This would be great, and I hope Joe sees this. I don't know what form it should take, but if there were an UnMENU FAQ and a Preclear FAQ, it could lighten his load a bit. It does not necessarily have to be 'managed' by Joe either.
February 15, 201115 yr Author I guess based on usage aka replies That would be my thoughts, Downloads doesnt mean anything for a forum. People asking questions and a dev that answers is what a forum is for and thus be the requirement of a sub forum. (High traffic) ...but the problem is, this all requires people, volunteers such as yourself. Thats the beauty of it. The stuff is alrdy there, it just needs to be easier to find. People post cause they need answers, dev's post because they want their stuff to work and people to like it. Its just the nature of the beast. Wiki's are nice, but like you said, they require more work than people are usually willing to do.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. No two people are alike, and I think we have a mixed bag of both scenarios. Some people, like myself, will dig through the wiki to a point, then give up and post. Others don't even know there is a wiki (somehow), or how to use it. Then there are those who never ask questions, they just lurk until they screw something up. It's the difference between people who are self-reliant, and people who want instant gratification, and all variations in between.
June 22, 201115 yr I'd like the ability to increase the number of posts per page. That's one of the first things I do when I join a new forum--bump it up to 50 ppp (if possible).
