Gig internet router

Featured Replies

Any suggestions for a good router (preferably Asus) that can keep up with Gigabit internet?  My old RT-AC68U is limiting me to ~250Mbps whereas bypassing it gives me a solid 944Mbps.  I'm talking wired speeds here, not wifi

Again not Asus, if you are man enough then go pfsense, I'm using a Qotom silent passively cooled unit and it is simply fantastic! I believe it can do symmetrical gigabit encrypted, best £280 aid I've ever spent

Summary: Shop for dedicated router with 2.5 GBit support.

I like my EdgeRouter ER-4, but its a couple years old now and doesn't support beyond Gigabit. It does max out my Gigabit network.  Faster than Gigabit seems to be teased with newer Cable Modems with 2.5 Gbit support.

I hear good things about various Mikrotik routers and 2.5 Gbit SFP adapters being put to work. Some have it working with 5Gbit SFP modules too.

Both have their own OS. I think both focus on wired lines. Though Mikrotik may have a model with Wifi support. I prefer to run WiFi AP separately so its easier to upgrade or setup Mesh systems. I use my old Router as dedicated WIFI AC Access Point, running DDWRT firmware with all the routing functions disabled.

Using pfsense on a ZBOX CI521 and it handles a 650 mbps with hardly any cpu load. That model isn't made anymore, but zotac has a bunch of dual nic boxes.

I use Draytek 2925, it age, but still have throughput 500Mbps max. This is the best router which I use, 99.9% feature could found in GUI. VLAN, DHCP database, WOL, rock stable, fast bootup ..... Selling point is user friendly.

I have ER4 but put at backup standby in longtime, because I haven't config (learn) it have all feature which need before act as master router.
