Cant backup Flash drive

Featured Replies

I am having an issue with my flash drive. I woke up this morning and after plugin updates my drive said it couldn't be read and written to. I loaded it into windows and chkdsk fixed this. some app data seems corrupt so I will be fixing this later. After having a scare I went to run backup of my flash device and it just seems to sit there. I have attached diags hopefully someone can help.

Personally, I would shut the server down.  Pull the Flash drive, take it to my Windows PC and copy all of the readable files off of the drive into a folder for backup.  (Basically, I would start by trying to copy the entire drive and see if that succeeds.  If it does not, I would work to get as many files off as possible.  I would think that you would only have one or two files with problems but get the rest off safely.)   This backup is your safety net!!!

Depending on which files are messed up will determine where you go from here.  Since (apparently) the drive will boot up to a running Unraid setup, you probably have problems with one or more plugins or/and Dockers.

I have copied every file to my windows desktop pc .. no files had issue copying

Over the years, I've had 3 different USB drives fail. I had them plugged into the back of the server and I think the heat just killed them over time. My current one has been in for over a year plugged into the front with fresh air and I have had no issues.

I would second the advice above and maybe think about getting a new drive since they are so cheap.

Now there is a folder/directory called    appdata   that is normally on the cache drive.  You can find where the files used by the Docker containers are stored by looking at the settings  at    Settings    >>>    Docker   )    It is possible that you have a problem with a file in that directory...

Okay so I have everything manually backed up, my docker apps are broken because the xml in the config folder is corrupt. This is something I can fix with a reinstall of the docker app. Unfortunatly I still can't use the flash backup app. If needed I can upload fresh diagnostics, I don't think anyone has actually looked at the ones I uploaded before. If I knew where to look I would do it myself, so if someone can point me toward which logs to investigate I will look further into the flash backup.

I downloaded the Diagnostics file and I didn't see anything unusual.  (Point of disclosure, I am no Guru at interpreting syslogs!)   What I would suggest is that you attempt to make a backup of the Flash Drive.  Note the time (and date) when you did that.  Now download the Diagnostics file and post that file and the time when you started the backup.

One thing, make sure that you have the Flash Drive plugged into a UBS2 port!  (USB3 ports are trouble spot for Unraid boot drives and certain MB/BIOS combinations.)

I started the backup at 10:10 am  here are the diags 2 min after starting, hoping this was long enough to get errors. since I don't see a log I don't know how long to let it set but the longest I have tried is an hour.

It looks like your problems are starting about here:

This indicates that you have problems with several missing and or corrupted files on your Flash Drive.  Windows disk checking program may say it has 'fixed' them but that is only the file structure and not the contents of the files. (It actually can't fix the actual contents of any file.  It basically can just modify the file structure so that the disk becomes readable again!)  Look and see if you have any files in the root of the Flash Drive with the extension of   .CHK  and if those exist they are pieces of files that Disk Checking Program could not figure out what or where they went in a existing file.  It saves them to allow you the chance to see if you can figure out where they belong.  Most people (including me) generally end up deleting them without looking at them!

Then you have this series of repeated entries:

Mar 15 12:07:19 Tower kernel: usb 5-2.2: USB disconnect, device number 4
Mar 15 12:07:19 Tower acpid: input device has been disconnected, fd 8

Mar 15 12:21:47 Tower kernel: usb 5-2.2: USB disconnect, device number 6

While the USB device numbers keep changing, the Logitech G19 Gaming Keyboard is always involved.

I suspect that you are also running a VM.  Is this true?  If so which one(s)?

I would definitely try booting into the Safe Mode (a Boot Menu option) and see if that allows you to make a Boot Flash Drive backup.

I suspect the problem is right here:

Mar 20 09:49:16 Tower nginx: 2021/03/20 09:49:16 [error] 3100#3100: *186 upstream timed out (110: Connection timed out) while reading response header from upstream, client: 192.168.1.189, server: , request: "POST /webGui/include/Download.php HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/var/run/php5-fpm.sock", host: "192.168.1.50", referrer: "http://192.168.1.50/Main/Flash?name=flash"

I am going to ping @bonienl as I think he is/was(?) involved in the design of the GUI.

Also I forgot to tell you my VM is windows 10, It is not the best setup (haven't been able to upgrade to 6.9 because of boot issues) but that is another problem for another day. I didn't know about the issues with my mouse and keyboard. I wonder if I replace them if that will go away.
