Using your unRaid server

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I wanted to know, how do you use your unRaid server, besides secure file storing. I'm pretty sure many of you use unRaid in very different ways and this makes me curious ;)

If there are more things, you are doing to unleash the full potential of your unRaid server, please let me know.

After boosting my unRaid server to the next level (hardwarewise), I thought about outsourcing more jobs from my computer to unraid.

Right now it runs as a fileserver, offers mail notifications on different events, sleep script, status checks to the iphone (istat) and other basic things.

Next steps will be "S.N.A.P." for hotplugging USB sticks/external HDDs and scripts for automatic backups and a secure VPN tunnel to another network.

Maybe even some media streaming service, if I can find something easy to set up and secure in usage.

I dont know how secure a webserver would be, thats where I have to do some research first.

I really like the idea of having my unRaid server everywhere around. So what do you do?

With the recent thread on getting virtualbox running on unraid, relatively trivially, I'm thinking more and more of removing all the current services that work directly under unraid (sickbeard, sab, couchpotato, transmission, airvideo etc) and running a 24/7 ubuntu (or similar) vm with the unraid storage mounted onto it via nfs.

Then running these services - and others- inside this VM.

This, in my eyes, will be more flexible in the long term.

Treating unraid itself as simply the 'storage engine' and virtualisation host will make a lot of the prodding around / custom package building that needs to go on at the moment obsolete in my usage.

I just need to buy some more memory first!

Here I use unRAID as a torrent and usenet client, run Subsonic, Sickbeard, Crashplan and now with VirtualBox I run my router into the unRAID server, saving 20W of power previously used by an Atom machine.

Maybe I will follow boof's idea and run all services directly from a guest in VBox.

Like many, I use mine for mostly Media.  Sick Beard and SABnzb handle TV Shows, I manually organize my movies, and I store my iTunes and iPhoto Libraries on the machine too.  I run Air Video and iStat as well as use MySQL for my XBMC library.

Mainly movies, but it has backups of other data on it, and I use wget to download things rather than doing it from my PC.
