just built server question on HDD

Featured Replies

Hey guys so I just pretty much put together my first Unraid build except for the HDDs. Right now I am just using one 2tb drive and one 2tb parity drive. One of the 2tb drives I have has data on it can I use this or do I need to back it all up first??

You'll need to get that data off the drive first, then prepare it with a pre-clear (maybe even a deep level format before that), and then it's ready for the array.

Anything on it will be completely erased if you add it to the array, so back it up elsewhere if the data is important to you.

had another question...doesn't really pertain to this but can you have your unraid server on its side? Didn't know if this would affect hard drives or anything

you can have it any position you want.  Just make sure that you aren't preventing any airflow... heat is bad...

The configuration tutorial is a good place to start once your server is built.

thank you for that! also.. which version of unraid should i use? Guide says it is written for 4.6 should download that or 4.7?

Yes, it still applies for the most part.

There is one extra thing I would do on the settings page.  There should be an "alignment setting" and it would be best if you set that to mbr 4K aligned if you are starting from scratch.

If I was following that guide where at would that come up?
