Someone explain this to me ...

I gave a new Corsair HX850 PSU which states the power supply cable gas a detachable 4 pin connector in case the board is only using 20 pins and not 24.. I can understand this. But ... the cable has a 24 pin on one end and a two part connector of 18 and 6 on the other not 4. So .. if I WAS using 20 pins I would only be able to plug in the 18 pin end of the cable??? What's this all aboot? Did I just lose 2 pins somewhere ...

I'm guessing the two-part connector plugs into the modular power supply.  On the 24-pin end for the motherboard it is likely that a 4-pin block can be separated from one end if the motherboard supports only 20 pins.

That makes sense but to separate 4 pins it would need to be cannibalised there's no split point so I don't see how. Corsairs handbook explicitly states there's a 4 pin plug aside from a 20 pin which there isn't as you see from the pics. Anyways I've got power now. Just need to sort out what's dead on the system cos I'm seeing 'PEI intel reference code B7' so could be memory, CPU, board or anything else. I'm plugging in ddr4 2666 when system requires 2400. This should downclock surely? I'll raise this on a separate discussion if I don't get it sorted. I haven't got any 2400 memsticks to swap over and am reluctant to start taking CPUs out just yet.
