February 18, 201115 yr Hey guys, not sure what the issue is with my HDD, would love some assistance reading my syslog. Thanks in advance! Please let me know if any more information is required Matt Unraid_Syslog_2.17.11a.pdf
February 18, 201115 yr Author also: i've apparently been using the parity drive to store things since my other drive is disabled. I'm guessing it would have a detrimental effect to go and switch the parity drives out? I'm looking to purchase the next license up (the mid-tier one, I forget the name) so that I can add more drives but I don't want to mess with the configuration until I get this issue resolved and am comfortable that my data is secure. thanks again guys! edit: also running 4.5.3 sorry for leaving that out the first go around as it didn't seem too relevant at the time

In other words, the disabled disk's contents would be lost. 4.5.3 has a MAJOR bug when adding a new disk. It will show multiple disks as unformatted when you first power up the array, and if you press the "Fotmat" button at that time it will re-format ALL your disks. Be very careful. If you see multiple disks showing as un-formatted, just press the "Stop" button and then press "Start" once more. It should only show the one new disk as unformatted. Then UPGRADE to 4.6 or 4.7 before you kick yourself for not upgrading earlier. I would NOT suggest 5.0beta4 at this time. Joe L.
February 18, 201115 yr Author i see, so my next step should be to update my unraid version and then re-evaluate?
February 18, 201115 yr Author OK, i'm all set up on 4.7 but it's still showing that the disk is disabled. what is my logical next step here?
February 18, 201115 yr OK, i'm all set up on 4.7 but it's still showing that the disk is disabled. what is my logical next step here? Is the disk that is disabled actually working? Can you get a SMART report from it? smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sdX where sdX = the three letter drive designation If disabled, a write to it failed. If the reason was a loose cable, stop the array, power down re-seat the cables, power back up, try another smart report. If the drive itself failed, replace it. Stop the array Replace the drive Power up, Start the array It will re-construct the data onto the new drive. If it was just a loose cable Stop the array un-assign the disabled drive Start the array with it un-assigned (unRAID will forget its model/serial number and then accept it as its own replacement) Stop the array Re-assign the drive Start the array once more. This time it will re-construct the disk onto itself including all the "writes" you've made while it was disabled. Joe L.
February 18, 201115 yr Author so i'm thinking the disk may be bad.... here's my drive setup as is and i guess my options, would love your advice on best course of action (and thank you so much for your help thus far!) Drive Setup: Parity: 1TB Drive A: 1TB (disabled) Drive b: 750g Extra Drive: 1.5TB My goal was to eventually move the 1.5TB into my parity slot and then buy the upgraded license to have the 2.75TB's of storage space. as it stands now I'd like to remove Drive A from the array to maybe run more tests on it or see what's going on with it but I dont' want to lose any data. How can I successfully integrate the Extra Drive into the array and remove Drive A w/o losing data? I'd be willing to buy the next license up if that will make this easier, just want to make sure I'm cautious along the way as I have spent hours backing up a ton of my media onto the array and really don't want to lose all of that time and have to re-create it.
February 19, 201115 yr Author Update: replaced HDD, all green lights, good to go. Thanks for everyone's help!!
