Best practice(s) to setup 2 user Rig

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So, I intend (plan) on setting up a 2-in-1 user rig for productivity (creators) purposes. These are people who will use CAD softwares like Blender, Sketchup, Revit etc., Graphic design & video editing softwares like Adobe Creative Cloud and render softwares like Lumion, V-Ray & 3D Max etc.

Below are the parts:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X with a Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

MB: Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200MHz

GPU: x2 RTX 3070 8 GB Founders Edition ( Whenever these will be available 😏😩)

PSU: Corsair RMx (2018) 850 W 80+ Gold

Case: Lian Li LANCOOL II-X

Storage:

  • x2 SSDs SATA:
    • x1 SSD 500Gb --> for Cache drive
    • x1 SSD 500Gb --> for Dockers & other VMs
  • x2 250Gb NVMe SSDs Unassigned --> 1 each for the 2 User VMs
  • x3 5400-7200 RPM HDDs
    • x1 8Tb  HDD --> for Parity
    • x1 4Tb NAS HDD --> for General data & backups
    • x1 4Tb HDD Unassigned --> for VMs passthrough partitioned  --> allocate each partition to VM as a 2nd drive for storage

Your thoughts, advice, recommendations (and even complaints) especially on the storage part will be much appreciated. I've been doing research on this for quite some time now and feeling I may be getting overwhelmed.

How did you do with that configuration? It seems to me that the components in terms of performance should meet the objective. I don't really have much experience with the issue of storage.

@Kich902

How is your project going?

I'm also looking into making renderfarm for 3ds max for my gf in Unraid. She renders on a laptop...... I tried helping with a win10 VM from another linux distro on my R720 server earlier but I cant make it work.

Reading up in front of it this time, but there is little to read 🙂

Haven't even started; with this microchip shortage causing PC parts to have ridiculous prices I'm still waiting. Hope things get better.

Totally understand 🙂

I have a old server to play with and fairly cheap parts if I need any, ordered 32 gb ram to double my existing setup for $70.

But please enlighten me about what the plan of using unraid as a render farm contains, cant find any "dockers" or dummie-friendly ways to do this. Is it hardcore sudo work or is there easy tools to use?

I don't intend on doing any render farm as you put it. Mine is a 2 to 3 user in one PC, that's it.
