February 21, 201115 yr Hey Just started looking into unRAID as a NAS solution, and have to say I'm very impressed with the package thus far... however, seem to be falling at the first hurdle (likely as I've zero experience with linux!). Have searched the forums but haven't seen a similar problem (if there's already posts about this, feel free to issue a slap and please point me at them ^^ Have the server booting via flash drive, with 2 x 2Tb disks installed (1 x SAMSUNG HD204UI and 1 x Western Digital WD20EARS, both brand new). I plan on using one of the drives for data and the other as parity. Managed to get unMenu installed and configured to send emails, (with a feeling of such pride given my command line noobinity) and now trying to run preclear_disk.sh on each of the drives at the same time. Initially was trying to do this via a single telnet session with multiple screen sessions, but was getting a bit lost attaching / detaching from the different screens, and think I actually managed to exit the sessions rather than detaching from them as eventually there weren't any screens to reattach... So have started again, using 2 different telnet sessions (hoping that exiting the preclear part way through won't cause issues with the drive) - regardless, either way that I'm accessing the drives (either multiple screen or telnet sessions), I only seem to be able to kick preclear off on one of them. From what I've read, it should be possible to do at least 2 (have got 2Gb of RAM installed, but read that trying to preclear 3 or more drives might run in to issues with limited amount of RAM?) The second disk seems to start, and I get as far as the status screen showing % complete, HDD temp, elapsed time etc but the time / % complete / bytes read doesn't ever increase (the first session seems to work fine, currently at 12 % complete of the pre-read phase)... I take it that it should be possible for me to pre-clear both disks at the same time, or is this not advised? When I try and output the preclear log, the file gets created but has no content (I'm guessing that's because I've not actually completed any of the 10 steps yet?) Looking at the syslog, I can see a bunch of errors such as { DRDY ERR } which a quick google suggests could mean that the drive is faulty but would like someone with a bit more knowledge on the specifics to geive me a heads up if they could Any help greatly appreciated syslog.txt
February 21, 201115 yr There is a problem with WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0. Reseat the cabling and try again. It may be a bad drive.
February 22, 201115 yr I bought two of the Western Digital WD20EARS drives -- one of them pre-cleared successfully, but every time I attempted to do the second one, it would start the pre-read, going about half the speed it should (around 40 MB/s) -- The pre-read got up to 3% and then went all the way down to 0 MB/s and stayed there. I tried different cables, different SATA slots on the motherboard, different power connectors from the PSU, but nothing fixed it. I plugged the drive into my windows system to run WD's LifeGuard diagnostic program and it said it would take over 16000 hours to do the "extended test". I ended up RMA'ing the drive and they sent me a new one -- New one works perfectly fine.
February 22, 201115 yr Author Cool - thanks for the heads up... will run the LifeGuard diagnostic in a windows box and if that comes back ok, will try re-seating the cables, otherwise I'll get it replaced. Will post the results once I get home.
