What do you encrypt? A share or a drive?

I have never encrypted any disk or drive before.  I'm replacing all my 2 TB drives to bigger ones.  I want to know which is which?  Can I also encrypt something that is already being used (with data on it).

    Unraid offers Encrypted FS (XFS or BTRFS), so that is at the disk level.

    If you want, you could play with the include / exclude to limit a share to some disks.

     

    I think that you have to format a drive to switch its FS between regular et encrypted, the data on the disk will be lost.
