noob question ./preclear_disk.sh /dev/sdX -a -A? did i format incorrectly?

Featured Replies

Hey guys got a noob question.. just started building my unraid server and i've got 1 2tb drive up and running and just started preclearing the second one...

i was following this config guide

http://www.lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Configuration_Tutorial

and then read somewhere in the forums about 4k alignments or something like that using -A or -a...

i've precleared my first 2 drives with this ./preclear_disk.sh /dev/sdX

then i noticed the guide was for an older version...i'm using the latest stable build 4.7  am i going to have any issues?

please help thanks..

i still have my parity drive but need to get data off of it before a preclear.. should i preclear that drive differently?

What kind of drives are they?

The short version is:

Western Digital EARS with jumper on pins 7-8 you want to preclear without the -A option.

Western Digital EARS without jumper on pins 7-8 you want to preclear with the -A option.

Any other drive that is marked as Advanced Format (AF) you would want to preclear with the -A option.

Any drive that is not marked as AF doesn't matter, either method will align on a boundary.

If you want to change the drive you have already precleared (assuming it is still in a precleared state and has not had anything written to it or been added to an array) there is a way to do that quickly.  Check in the preclear thread for more info.

And thanks for reminding me the config tutorial needs to be updated ;)

Also put in a note that preclear_disk.sh is a living ongoing addon so one should always check for the newest version before they're about to preclear.

ummm.. ok even more lost now..

i've done 2 drives now..

samsung f4 2tb advanced format drive

and currently doing a wd green 1.5 tb

both times i just entered ./preclear_disk.sh /dev/sdX and then typed Yes

the samsung has been setup as a data drive and has data in it now

the 1.5 is still being cleared...

i used the latest version from the preclear thread i think...

do i need to do everything all over again?

If you are using the latest version of the preclear script the "alignment" it uses, in the absence of a specific "-A" or "-a" command line argument will be the alignment you specified on the unRAID settings screen.

You can determine the alignment by typing

fdisk -l -u /dev/sdX

If you've not yet assigned the disk to your array you can use the "-C" option to change the sector alignment.
