HDD smart enable issue

Recommended Posts

I tried to do a short smart test and the results came back;

Smart Short Test of /dev/hdb will take from several minutes to an hour or more.

smartctl -t short -d ata /dev/hdb 2>&1

smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build)

SMART Disabled. Use option -s with argument 'on' to enable it.

How do I write the command properly to start SMART on this drive?

I tried this but it did not work;

root@Tower:~# smartctl -a on -d /dev/hdb

smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build)

on: Unknown device type '/dev/hdb'

When I boot unraid, through the BIOS it says the smart command failed for that HDD. Though, in the main.htm, I see a temp reading of 0 as opposed to an asterisk.

I do see info when I run an HDparm and Smart Status Report.

This HDD is a Maxtor_5A300J0_A8247TEE

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Camel

It seems to indicate that you cannot enable smart on that drive.

Maybe I'll use this drive in an USB enclosure to move data around and replace this drive with a newer one that will give me the option to have smart enabled. I precleared this Maxtor drive with no issues other than I can't enable smart.

Thanks for your time and input.
