February 26, 201115 yr Note: The ASUS mobo has 8 sata ports - 6 driven by the Intel ICH10R Southbridge chipset and the other 2 by JMicron® JMB322. I have seen reports from others using this chip-set(JMB322). They seem to have problems with SMART monitoring (temp.) info from these ports and it seems they will not spin down either. So I am going to try it and see - if this is indeed a problem on my setup then I shall add a 3rd sata card PCIe x1 with 2 sata ports. Currently I would look at either the Adaptec 12xx or a generic Silicon Image based card. .. It looks like the JMicron sata ports on this motherboard only half work! I finished the 1st cycle of preclear on 4 drives (they took between 24:20 to 24:48Hrs to finish). I plugged 2 new drives, one on the ICH10 port and another on the JMicron. When I boot and use unMenu to inspect the drives, both drives show up, but the JMicron does not display the temp. I think another user reported the same about this controller.. It looks like the controller can/does not pass SMART info. Here is what I get when I do short SMART check from unMenu: Smart Short Test of /dev/sdg will take from several minutes to an hour or more. smartctl -t short -d ata /dev/sdg 2>&1 smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build) Copyright © 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net === START OF OFFLINE IMMEDIATE AND SELF-TEST SECTION === Warning: device does not support Self-Test functions.
