[SOLVED] Constant Crashing... getting irritating now

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am getting serious issues now. I have built a new build server today and installed 7 disks (all WD20EARS). Whenever i do anything that requires usage of the disks, the system crashes.

So far this has included preclear which refuses to get past 4% before it reboots itself. So I gave up on that. Then I tried to copy some files over to the share which after 10 attempts has caused the server to crash all 10 times (i get an unreadable screen on the monitor attached to the server).

Lastly, i tried to add a parity drive, which got 1.3% through and crashed... same unreadable screen. Not responding to CTL-ALT-DEL.

I notice some errors on the syslog. I have attached this.

Please someone help me!!! :-\

If it is a brand new server, the odds are the memory is not set up correctly in the BIOS, or, the power supply inadequate for the number of disks.

Perform a memtest, overnight.  It should have absolutely no errors.  The Memory Voltage. timing, and clock speed should be set to that needed by your SPECIFIC make and model memory strips.  Some BIOS get it right, many do not, especially with premium RAM with special needs.

What exact power make/model supply are you using?  Many cannot handle 7 disks.

I will do the memtest.

Yeah, I think i might have just worked that out too... Bloody ebuyer!!!! I started memtest and it crashed almost immediately. So I took out the second stick of ram leaving 2GB in and so far up to 48%... ok

[EDIT] Memtest passed with 0 errors.... fingers crossed.

I had a similar issue with my asus board on the Win7 HTPC... It crashed in a similar way and in the end i had to underclock the memory in the bios. I tried that here and the server tells me that underclocking failed.

Let the memtest run overnight.  If you still have 0 errors with the one stick of RAM in the morning, you can get a start on using/loading your server.  I'll bet it will not crash as frequently.  Your power supply is fine...  I have the same one in one of my servers.

Thanks Joe, Memtest left for 8 hours, and no errors. Parity disk built ok. All looking good.

Strange though that the system did not like that second stick of ram?

Not strange at all.
