Is it possible to get monitor output from Kodi-standalone?

Featured Replies

I am currently starting to migrate from my fedora server based custom server to Unraid. My Fedora server system was running 3400G APU and I had it setup so that Kodi-standalone would output to a monitor. There was no GUI otherwise. This way I could use the server as a HTPC as well. Very efficient use as only 1 system was required and no dedicated GPU was needed.

Is this possible with Unraid? It would be nice to make use of the iGPU in some way as I believe it is not possible to passthrough APUs.

I have not seen this directly, but it should be possible. Potentially the easiest method is to run a VM with GPU passthru, but I'm not sure if iGPU can pass through on your configuration.

The biggest issue is that unRAID's kernel isn't likely to include GPU-related modules, so you may need a custom kernel to do so. Between a custom kernel with proper modules, and a Docker container with kodi-standalone and everythig it requires, it might be possible.

I know this isn't an "answer" as much as it is "a few thin leads to investigate" but it's something. If you have further questions, I'll gladly do what I can.

Have a look at this section in the 6.9 release notes. But you will only need the drivers if you want to use if a docker etc.

https://wiki.unraid.net/Manual/Release_Notes/Unraid_OS_6.9.0#GPU_Driver_Integration

If you can separate the GPU into its own IOMMU group you will be able to pass it thru to a VM, You may need to use ACS Override etc.

At the point you pass thru the GPU the Unraid console output will be lost. But you will have access over the LAN to the WebGUI.

I did not think you could passthrough iGPUs but it looks like its a thing. I will give the VM route a try as that's the best solution short of SR-IOV. I was planning to upgrade to 8-16 core cpu but now maybe I will just try to get away with 8 core APU :)
