March 1, 201115 yr Has anyone had any experience with using an i5-760 on the SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O?? SuperMicro support tells me that the X8SIL has not been tested with an i5. The board supports i3 series CPUs. I already have an i5-760 and was wondering what the thoughts are here regarding trying to use it on this board. A comparison of the two chips shows that the differences are mostly lithography, wattage, and surprising to me that the i3 has built-in graphics. See http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=46472,48496,. They are both of course socket 1156.
March 1, 201115 yr ...this is from the SM FAQ: Question I have noticed that on the X8SIE-LN4 board the i5 series CPU doesn't list as being supported, and the BIOS generates a warning on boot. Is it just missing microcode? What would it take to have it supported? Answer Core i5 series processors are not supported on the X8SIE series motherboards by any chance. This is because Intel mentioned that the 3420 chipset inside the X8SIE motherboard is not supporting any Core i5 or i7 processor. It is not because of missing micro code in the BIOS. The X8SIL-F also has the 3420 chipset. ...another FAQ indicates that i3 and i5/i7 memory interface-specs differ. Regarding the X8SIL-F there's also a FAQ that states that you need to use ECC RAM along with an i3. ...but ECC support is not listed in the CPU comparison from intel, which you quoted (so I'd not consider that a reliable source of information :-) I'd rather trust SM with their FAQ, since that should reflect some real life experience. ...regarding your post, I gather that nobody did try it (yet) and all hints indicate that the attempt will fail.
March 1, 201115 yr someone on the web was saying he was running an i5 with the xsil8-f at first it was apparently supported but after some time support was withdrawn. maybe to push attention towards the xeon processors. http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?s=2242f96e7332f5aa5367fd4531dad594&p=1035778098&postcount=6 also in the comment there are reports an i5 works http://www.servethehome.com/supermicro-x8sil-f-compatibilitycore-i3s-and-i5s/ Patrick says: June 4, 2010 at 4:59 am How does it tell you the i5 is unsupported? I have used an i5-650 with the X8SIL-F no problem. What is unsupported is video from the Clarkdale onboard GPU. The Clarkdale and Lynnfield CPUs do work though. reference here too http://www.servethehome.com/supermicro-x8silf-motherboard-v102-review-whs-v2-diy-server/ then again non of this is an garantee
March 3, 201115 yr Author Thanks Heretic for the additional info. I have not decided if I am actually going to try it though. I think I might just get the X3440 or X3450 CPU and not worry with it. I have enough to do with my file server build-out than to stretch the envelope on this.
