oh ok  so  was a mistake then

so  megaraids  means   you cant reflash it  then  or least a different brand

i remember doing 1 card few years ago but i dont remember what card i used, to flash from raid

so   stay away from megaraid name then.. i thought cuz it was a LSI  and was 8i  thats all i needed lol

the card cant even detect 1 SSD plugged into it either

but ill check the link thanks

These are basically the same and enough for spinners.

These are PCIe 3.0, 9300-8i and 9400-8i are SAS3 also, could justify for SSDs or when using more than 8 disks with a SAS expander.

Take a close look at those cards you listed. Some of them are meant for internal connections and others have external connections, like to plug in to a disk shelf. The Unraid wiki is a good tool and the link posted above has some good info as well. Best to do some research before ordering.

oh ok so i wanna go with 9300-8i, 9400-8  those right

i currently have 7 Data 1 Parity and 1 nvme caceh drive

i just bought  a norco 20 Hotswap case..

im running a Asus X570 Gaming Tuf board.. which has Pcie4

so im better off to get the 9300-8i, 9400-8  as they are PCIE3

to get the most out of my computer right?

and i have a SAS Expander card i bought last year

@JorgeB

so i saw this card

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/143604880894?epid=1404809612&hash=item216f8495fe:g:J7sAAOSwcjpevOg8

are they no good  for having more then 8 hard drives?   with the expander card

as i looked up the 9300 9400 they jump up 150 dollars 250 dollars

or do you need that to handle the hard drives..

or would you need to buy 2 of those 9240 cards  to handle more drives

just seeing which way to go

as i have this case coming

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B001NO7THO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

only wanna buy a card once and future proof

that card  and used with whatever Sata3/Sas expander card i have

or

this card

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/143299825144?epid=14036731155&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item215d55cdf8:g:ZRcAAOSw7D1cRx6E&amdata=enc%3AAQAFAAACcBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%2Fn%2BzU5L90Z278x5ickk7d4nremBkvNKtcC0ZwqXDND2eGFXWxFXmzigtI9k21FCqpbAZs%2FaR7X6MH8YftmILYYj5V6%2B9SwMzJrgbHxp9c4EmKG706XvUyYyFsj%2B%2Fwf1bMs8okjC7mGvFwzBych6z4Pk4h3o4fQH82NxPMcw%2FlTmrhB1SezqshQV3buyOAQ9zMcRv4YRVHwNUfFaTC8c9CSR2SxbGOTy8O3oLCpeLNlkf2da1FoEXgSdpGKgstqHJ%2B9Y9QdvN8xjDafR8pi%2FDoQeAROWBwDaYZ71YGTv3wg4LmGdKp%2FrfcM5Bas%2BcxDK1VlHRLfav9Swtl9lmWfFxT17%2Fs1QETvPJz1NY86EV8V2cHvBLEJyLhJ6qg%2F1plOGvalxQr%2FelGlnapI0%2Bl7HeJy28GX2gLjn2gOqqbH1eDJN3hHUJW45eRF4Cpb63MC0Y0lkm3oYUVtz8xWs2ic22JeKnBeY6Q%2Fq76BUgWss2OxAQs2gnv%2FGfBWWpfh5bIST1UR3twJX5PPRYAbCsr71HM6DyY1HBHHGJIoPgBDC7kXDh8drnrAShO4fNFUkX9yRk9b6JF6dNMvbTgOt8j1rEaxOB1PfXWWfmFPEOX9OHZOZtOoYIrAwsxsrsoKYXt9psRWEzIHIgHmUmqC2G8mqr4kvQ%2FNSGWndlikzX8d0B7y60M5SHA%2B7q9WE2VrShQPfsXlB0SewQ18nkRBUiahZpNpeLMvM3BIQoji2X6DzWJ1sHucH7ybbCtnP2byJnGYOQIUWMEiS7LmZhE%2Bie33htOf8aQ8qtNqx6IvDcGId6Q%3D%3D|cksum%3A14329982514469fdf673c87a4ccd8c2afc81ac304bf7|ampid%3APL_CLK|clp%3A2334524

so i dunno  is the first card 12GB/s  going to make this expander card i have faster.

or is this 6gb/s  card in teh 2nd link going to be slower with the expander card

as i dunno  skimm it all   and not 100% sure

12gbs ==> Expander card ==> hard drives   waht be the speed

6gbs ==> Expander card ==> hard drives   what be the speed

or it doesnt matter due to hard drives are only 6gbs

or do  you got with 12gbs  in case you wanna add sas drive to the array

as i still dont know what route to go

6gb  older card or the 12gb newer card?  does the 12GB  keep the expander card max at the speed it can handle?   where the 6b  only limited to 6gb

so then i could do twice as many 6GB  hard drives and keep them high speed  0 loss in performance?

Depends if the expander is an LSI SAS3 with databolt, again see here:

@JorgeB

so i looked up the card i have it doesnt say its LSI SAS3  with databolt  i dunno

its this card

tis a 6GB card thats all i understand from the page

and from the page  it doesnt have the brand "unbranded"

as this card is not a LSI ,Dell,Supermicro, etc

it has no info really on Amazon or Ebay  maybe you know this card

https://www.ebay.com/itm/324342881212

so   i still  not sure what way do i go??

as what i think you said earlier

8 hard drives and less go with 6GB HBA card

8+  hard drives go with 12GB HBA card

and then would i need a 12GB   Expander card   but this one i have is good enough for now

ah ok  i just looked frig 2000 dollars thise norco at 400 was alot for me..  as i just upgrading from my antec df-85 gaming case as my server ..

whats special about the supermicro  over the norco?

i did like the 45drives ones   but they are 1000 just for the case part nothing in it..

always something

so much to learn i guess

Link to comment

or maybe its just better to go with

the whatever lsi card i have  thats 8i  2 port for 8 hard drives

and use 8 onboard sata ports and use this expander as is

i wanted to get a newer lsi card due to i expanding  was gonna give my sister this old one  i have

and i liked  how lsi cards the cables all come out nicly in 1 cable then spread out at the end    not so cramped  in the case i have  if u use the sata ports off the board
