Moving disk to backplane - do I lose everything?

Featured Replies

Trying to build a server.  The 4u case that I'm awaiting has an SFF-8087 based backplane to which I will be attaching my drives for hot swap via an LSI minisas/sata card.

my question:  Can I go ahead and setup the system now out of the case hooking up some of the drives via direct motherboard connection, start using them along with the 2 x m.2 drives on the motherboard and then later when the case comes just put them in there and attach via the LSI card and everything will be recognized and still work?  Or will I have to reformat and lose everything at that point and start over again?

Never used backplane based system before, sorry if stupid question.  It will be 2 weeks until case is here so I'm itching to get started now.

It's fine if it's a standard backplane, if it's a NetApp or similar the disks identification can change.

In my opinion:

wait until you have all the parts to build the new system.

why risk moving drives/parts around multiple times.

Will be lsi 9211-8i card running the backplane.

want to get up and running 1) I’m impatient. 2) chia 3) 3080 card sitting idle will cost me a hundred bucks before I get back from my work trip.
