garys
Hey, I don't know how much research you've done on using flash card readers, but just be aware that there are at least some out there that are known to not produce the unique GUID needed for a paid unRAID license. If all you want it for is the free one, then it will probably work. Just a heads-up in case you weren't aware. Here's one post with some info (read the whole thing, as there are some details about which ones work and which dont): http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=6185.60 Quote Link to comment
HAVOC
I think this is one of the readers chosen in the thread. Correct me if I'm wroung. Thx for the heads up brotha. Quote Link to comment
garys
You are correct. wsume99 said he had two identical ones of the same model that worked with the free license, but he never posted the GUIDs. Assuming the numbers were different, which he implied they were, that model at least has a chance of working with a paid license. Ultimately, it's up to LimeTech to determine whether any GUID produced is valid. Hopefully that model will prove to be one of the good ones. Good luck with your build! Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
Have you seen the Norco SS-500? They are not only cheaper, but better (in my opinion) than the Supermicro units. Quote Link to comment
HAVOC
Thx for all the input. I'm going to look at the norco but trayless is nice for the cm case at 79 dollars. Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
Neither the Supermicros nor the Norcos are trayless. I haven't found a good quality trayless 5-in-3 yet. All the ones I've tried have bad airflow or poor locking mechanisms or some other issue. If you want trayless, I suggest you go for 4-in-3s or 3-in-2s instead. Quote Link to comment
HAVOC
Yeah that's what I meant... The icy dock 3 in 2 trayless. I think I may just go with the cheaper cooler master Case and two icy dock backplanes. Whatcha think? Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
Ah, I see. The 3-in-2s look nice. I don't really care for the CM 690 as it will limit your expandability (and force you to use some internal drives). I would suggest a case with nine 5.25" bays instead. There are a few options listed here. Some are even cheaper than the CM 690. If you packed one of those with 3-in-2s you could max out at 12 drives. You could then fill that last slot with a single hot swap bay for 13 drives. Or use the top mounted bay in the Thermaltake V6... That would cost $360 - $380 plus the cost of the case. You could also use something like these 4-in-3 units and also achieve 12 drives for less money: AMS DS-3141SSBK Steel / Aluminum 3.5" SATA 4-IN-3 SATA Module $300 + cost of the case Or if you really like the look of the Icy Docks, there's this more expensive option: ICY DOCK MB974SP-B Tray-less 4 in 3 SATA I & II Hot-Swap Backplane Raid Cage Module with eSATA & US $390 + cost of the case These prices illustrate why the Norco 4224 for $400 and the Norco 4220 for $334 are so popular. They cost around the same or less than the configurations above, and give you nearly double the hot swap bays. Even if you only ever use half of the bays, you still might save money... HAVOC
So thanks Rajahal for throwing my plans upside down lol...so I may consider the thermltake v5 case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133099 and the icy dock backplane http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817994113 what do you think? Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
Yeah, that tends to be my specialty... If you are willing to spend that much on the IcyDocks, then I think that will turn out nice. Quote Link to comment
HAVOC
Thanks for your help. The only other question I had is any suggestions for a sata card? I may need one down the road as I only have 4 drives in my array. Doesnthe supermicro support any decent card for more ports? Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
Absolutely. Your motherboard will support one of these cards: Supermicro SASLP You'll also need two forward breakout cables, such as these. That combination will net you 8 more SATA ports. Quote Link to comment

Thanks in advance ...be aware that all SM boards are known to be VERY picky abut RAM selection and the X7SPA is no exception to that rule. Here's a good thread in in which you can find references to RAM that did work for others: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5133.0 Quote Link to comment
