New linux vm installs fail

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am trying to install a new linux vm and keep getting error as soon as the vnc screen pops up:

mount: mounting /dev/vda on /media failed: Invalid argument

unmount: can't unmount /media: Invalid argument

mount: mounting /dev/vda on /media failed: Invalid argument

Then it goes into the install screen and after selecting language a region it gives me error of: No device for installation media was detected.

I have been using default vm configuration and have tried various combinations of configuration changes and keep getting same error. I am trying to install ubuntu and parrot os and get same outcome. I am on version 6.9.2

Have you specified your primary vdisk properly (the virtual disk image onto which you plan to install Linux)? Post your XML or a screenshot of the VM template editor.

Thanks for the reply John_M.

Im rather new to unraid and not aware of what to specify the primary vdisk. I left it with default settings of location to auto and BUS to VirtIO.  Here is my XML. I appreciate your time and help, ive been researching this for some time now and cant find anything specific for my error.

Not an expert of linux vm, but when you use virtio for storage shouldn't you change the target to vda instead of hdc?

Maybe you changed manually in the xml the bus from sata to virtio and forgot to change the target?Otherwise if you set all with the gui it could be a bug.

From redhat:

Change the entry to use the virtio device by modifying the bus= entry to virtio. Note that if the disk was previously IDE, it has a target similar to hda, hdb, or hdc. When changing to bus=virtio the target needs to be changed to vda, vdb, or vdc accordingly.

I have tried deleting it and starting from scratch but keep getting same error. This was not an issue on previous version, It was straight forward and didn't have to modify xml. Starting to think this may be a version bug?

I really appreciate everyone's time and help!

I'm reading about the same error because of the disk not formatted, did you format the vdisk (vda)?

Thank you very much, I was able to follow that links instructions and format the vdisk. Then I went back and loaded the OS iso file to install the linux operating system and I still get original error message:

"mount: mounting /dev/vda on /media failed: Invalid argument

unmount: can't unmount /media: Invalid argument"

Here is my updated xml after formating disk and changing target dev='vda'

ANother item I noticed is that when I update the vdisk target dev from hcd to vda it allows me to save it but after I start it I still get same error but it processes quicker from that error message screen to the install screen. Then when i shut it down and go ti edit it I noticed ig reverts my dev=vda to dev=hda.

I was never able to figure out these errors but I was able to install the linux OS. I Ran the OS from the image and was able to install it on the previously vda target. I appreciate everyone's time and help.
