DELL r510 no longer boot from a USB after a key died.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm running a DELL r510 with unraid Pro from 1 month and yesterday my USB key died (started with read only and then full of errors).

I tried to replace the usb with another one following the guide but the server seems to be ignoring the new USB key as it doesn't recognize it as a boot device.

I tried with Unraid USB creator on Mac, Windows and even Ubuntu but none happens. I tried with both UEFI support option checked and not, but same results. I tried also to manually restore from the backup I did last week and recover with the manual copy and make_bootable script.

I tried with a newly purchased Verbatim 16Gb drive, a 8Gb, a 2Gb and a 4Gb, all of them formatted with FAT32 and FAT16 even partitioned with 4Gb......none.

I wonder if there's a way to get rid of this issue and installing unraid on a hard drive.
It seems to be stupid to have a server with redundant cpu, memory, power adapter, hard drives, and give all of your stuff in a 10$ usb stick that can leave you out at any moment.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance and best regards.

A little update after a few hours spent on retries.
This time server has boot with success, changing boot mode from BIOS to UEFI (why it was booting with the other USB key????), but after a few seconds it displays the following error and keep retrying.....
