[SOLVED] Giant Performance Problems

Featured Replies

Hi,

yesterday we discovered big performance issues with our unRaid server. Writing was quite normal at usual rates, but reading was incredibly slow. The unMenu disk performance meter showed 500 KB/s when copying files from the unRaid server to the desktop - a simple ISO file of a Microsoft CD took 120 minutes to copy.

I tried almost everything, rebooting the server, rebooting the clients. After some time my router hang up, no internet anymore. Rebooted the router, internet was there again, still slow speeds when reading data.

I quited trying after a few hours (had some other work to to ...) an left office at 20:00. My server inspector informed me at 23:30 that my servers  (one Win SBS 2008 Premium and one Server 2008 working as Terminalserver) weren't reachable. OK, so no emails tonight, no problem. Today I went back to office and found my router completely flickering on the two connected ports (internet and connection to 16 port giga switch). Turned it off, back up again everything was working - except that darn slow reading speeds.

Solution was simple but I had never ever to do that - power off the Netgear Switch, wait 5 seconds, power the switch back on - voila, works again. Why did the the switch run havoc? Why only in reading direction? Nobody will ever know...
