Help me decide on my next 100Tb server (Synology vs Custom Build)

Featured Replies

Here's my current setup:

1x Synology DS415+ filled with 2x12Tb drives and 2x6Tb for a total of 36Tb (using SHR-1, so less actual storage).

1x SUPERMICRO SYS-5028D-TN4T with 64G of RAM, Intel Xeon D-1541, it has 2x6Tb drives in it and a 500G flash drive. This is where Unraid currently lives.

The current setup is essentially using the Unraid/Supermicro server for running VMs/Docker/Plex and the Synology as pure raw storage. They are connected via NFS shares which I mount on Unraid.

I'm pretty happy with the setup overall, I just need 1) more space and 2) maybe a better server as the CPU in my current server does not support any in-hardware video transcoding, which is a pain if I ever need to transcode a PLEX stream. This second point though is of less priority... 3) it needs to be SMALL in footprint, power consumption AND be QUIET!

My objective now is to have a system supporting 100Tb+. My synology has lasted me for 7 years now and counting, so I'm very found of it. My initial idea was getting a 12 bay synology for one massive storage volume and keep using the supermicro for the "brains" and running everything.

The problem is, the 12 bay synology I was looking at (DS3617xs) costs 2500 euros. That's not counting the 16G of additional ram I'm going to need to run 100Tb, which puts me at 3000 euros +. Considering all I really need is a dumb storage device that supports 2 drive fails, seems a pretty steep price to pay.

So my next idea is to maybe have a new server built that takes only the "dumb storage" role to replace the 12 bay synology I had in mind, and connect that to my unraid server via NFS.

Of course, having everything in 1 (brain + storage) would be great, though I'd like to keep using my supermicro server for which I shelled out quite a few $$$ at the time.

Any suggestion would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

...why not create a newer unRaid box for VMs & Dockers, inkluding IGP for Plex transcoding and reuse the old SM parts?

The SUPERMICRO SYS-5028D-TN4T is based on this board: https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/motherboard/X10SDV-TLN4F which seems great for a Storage Array, when fitted with a SAS HBA and larger Case, as it has 10GBE Ethernet as well.

Maybe find a new ITX MB for fitting in the old SM Case. I do not know if the backpanel is replaceable and can be moved with old MB, though.
