T1000
I'm currently running: M5A78L-M PLUS/USB3 AMD Sempron™ 140 2700 MHz M1015/LSI 9211-8i SAS to SATA Card Corsair CP-9020122-UK CX650 ATX/EPS 80 PLUS Fractal Design Case Define XL Titanium 2 Parity drives and 12 data drives. It's about 9 years old. I'm thinking I should renew it before it gives up. I'd like a motherboard and CPU recommendation ideally with 10 SATA ports that the SAS card will also work on. It's only used as a file server. It needs to be able to sleep and wake up. It's been about 8 years since I built a PC I'm UK based. Can someone advise, please? If I fit a new mobo and cpu in the same case and connect the drives will unRAID just work? Thanks Quote Link to comment
M0zza
I think this comes down to budget with regards to Motherboard and CPU, and what futureproofing you want. If you don't want a lot of dockers and VMs I think you don't need to go mad specs-wise. And as long as you keep hold of the USB stick with Unraid on. It will work out the box. Quote Link to comment

Quality computing hardware doesn't just give up after a certain number of years. If that's your only concern and you don't have any reliability problems or performance bottlenecks then there's no need to upgrade. Normally the weakest point (by far) is the HDD, followed by the low quality PSU. If your motherboard doesn't show any aging signs (e.g. instability, bulging caps) then chances are it will last for another decade. CPUs and DRAM don't significantly degrade over its useful time (unless when always (often) run highly stressed with insufficient cooling). Edited June 1, 2021 by Lolight Quote Link to comment
