syslog question and sync errors

Featured Replies

I'm fairly new to unraid so just a couple questions after searching and not finding an answer.

I've had it up and running for a little over a month now. Just upgraded to 4.7 from 4.6. I knew it was time for my monthly parity check so I ran it and got hundreds of sync errors. Ran it again and same thing. Some thing's definitely wrong. When I first ran a parity check after the first set up (about a month ago) I also got alot of sync errors too but thought they were fixed after doing one parity check. I figured it was normal since I had some trouble transferring files across the network because of a loose sata cable. Also an unclean shutdown. Now that I'm reading more I should have fixed this problem back then.

Is this because of the bad file transfer from a month ago? Would that still produce sync errors? I know it could be another problem like bad ram, etc. which I'm definitely going to have start narrowing down the problem. Could it be both?

Well I'm trying to access my syslog and it shows that the syslog restarted but I can't seem to find the older syslog if i run: ls /var/log/

Is there another way to find the older syslog? I haven't rebooted since the upgrade and now several parity checks.

Thank you in advance and hope my questions and where I went wrong make sense. I'll post a syslog once I get that older log and at least check the ram overnight.

post the syslog that you have, it will help us figure out what is going on.

the bad.difficult file transfer should not be causing the... it is probably something else.

Please list the full spec for you server also as it will help us narrow it down to maybe a component issue.

hardware

hard drives:

2 2Tb WD EARS with the jumper

2 1.5 Tb WD EADS

1 500 Gb Samsung HD501LJ

1 500 Gb Seagate Barrucuda ST3500641AS

1 320Gb Seagate Baracuda ES ST3320820NS as cache drive

motherboard: Zotac NM10-B-E as seen here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813500048

I'm using all 6 of the sata ports on that. 4 of those those are through a port multiplier (jmicron)

power supply: Antec Neo Eco 520C seen here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371030

Ram: 2 2Gb Crucial ct25664a 800 mhz sticks in dual channel

Sata card: Syba SY-PEX40008, this is a 4 port sata card that I connect through the pcie x16 slot uses Sil3124. This one: http://www.sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=537

I have one drive connected to it. The WD 1.5 EADS

Case and extra hard drive caddy w/fan are cooler master.

Here's the log: http://pastebin.com/p2v0Pvwd

I took out some of the unneeded sabnzbd and sickbeard details. Also run subsonic on it. I just rebooted the server to check ram type btw. Thanks for any help. I'll run a ram check overnight later tonight and go from there.

Just getting back to this.

The ram was fine after letting it run over night. Maybe something is up with the disks. They all precleared fine. Here are the smart reports.

http://pastebin.com/PzHPWs1P

Thanks in advance.

You've got two drives which are reporting UDMA CRC errors, not a lot, but possibly indicates a SATA cable/connector issue:

Device Model:    WDC WD20EARS-00S8B1

Serial Number:    WD-WCAVY2790859

199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count    0x0032  200  200  000    Old_age  Always      -      79

and:

Device Model:    WDC WD15EADS-00P8B0

Serial Number:    WD-WMAVU0072350

199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count    0x0032  200  200  000    Old_age  Always      -      35

Regards,

Stephen

I'm coming back to this as it was never fixed and I have been busy.

I did switch out the sata cables. It helped. Now there are alot less parity errors. But still...

I thought changing the 500 gb samsung drive to a new 2 tb wd drive was gonna fix it but it didn't. In particular that drive always showed the temperature at 0 degrees so I thought there was something wrong with it. After replacing 500gb samsung drive the new 2 tb  wd one got 0 degrees also. I switched to a different port and now my parity drive on a different port is showing the temp as 0 ! This is using the add on card and the built in sata ports. I can switch the drives around and will always get at least one drive with 0 as the temp.

I'm still getting sync issues with parity checks.

I'll post some more logs tonight.

ugh.  :( maybe I should just get a whole new motherboard?

Did you get the January BIOS update?

Also, someone on newegg's reviews of this board is saying Zotac doesn't support more than 3 ports on this board if they aren't set to RAID mode. Could that be involved?

Here is the entire first review:

Rubbish for RAID

Pros: Silent and fanless, nice board layout, relatively inexpensive.

Cons: Do not buy this board if you're going to try to do anything with RAID. The BIOS RAID is useless; you cannot do any operations to the RAID (like rebuild) from the latest BIOS. You cannot use all 6 SATA ports if you set it to non-RAID mode, just 3 according to Zotac.

I'm using it with Linux, and although all of the ports do show up in non-RAID mode, using it this way causes some serious issues. Simultaneous use of all ports driven by the JMicron chip(s) causes one of the drives to slow down - as in, 2MB/sec slow.

Also, you can't read the SMART status with these ports.

Basically, you're never going to get to use all 6 ports without jumping through hoops, if at all.

Other Thoughts: Newegg should list this as having two or three SATA ports. I'm probably going to return the item (and expect a full refund) as the item doesn't function as described, although I'm going to try the very latest Linux kernel, first, as it may solve the issue.

I guessing the problem is with the MB.

hmm. I'll try the bios update and after that I think I'll just not use that motherboard anymore if it doesn't work. Thank you for the replies. Next time I'm sticking with recommended hardware.

So I replaced the motherboard with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138183

Good news is that all the hard drives now show a temperature.

Bad news is I'm still getting sync errors. :-\

I pulled out one stick of memory and ran 2 checks. Still got errors.

Did it with the other memory stick. Still got errors. I did this because i read that even if it passes the memcheck it may still be a ram issue.

So is it safe to assume it is one of the disk that is giving the errors?

I also run sabnzbd, sickbeard and subsonic. Should I remove these?

How should I proceed? Thank you for reading this and your time.

Still looking for some advice. Thanks.

Please post new SMART reports. The previous posting is no longer available. BTW, This new board has only 100Mbps LAN. You'll need a PCI Gig-e NIC to get speeds above about 12MBps.

I'm bringing this thread back to life. Finally got some time and some more parts.

So I'm adding a pcie lan card for gb speed to the above motherboard (was using a pci gb nic). I'm also finally replacing what I think is the faulty part causing the errors, the 4 port pcie sata card with a promise tx4 4 port pci sata card. I understand it'll be slower due to to pci but I'm ok with that as it should still be able to fit my needs.

My question is:

How can I get rid of the sync errors? After switching sata cards won't I still get errors? Is there a way to start fresh?
