[Solved] new Build-Failed copy over the network

Featured Replies

I am having file copy transfer issues with my new server.

I've been trying for days to use my server, and copy some movies to it, with no luck.

I've tried a few times, from both PCs (on Win 7) and from a Mac. All attempts to copy over the network to/from server fail.

I'm attempting to copy over the network from my media PC (running Windows 7 Ultimate), to my new server (4.7 Pro currently with 4 data drives -3x2TB and one 500GB, all Sata 2, available capacity is 6.5TB and still empty, parity 2TB Hitachi 7200 rpm, no cache drive yet). All disks were precleared and without errors, all green lights. Parity is valid.

Drag&Drop Copy operation crashes with an I/O error.  Error ID I/O 8007045D. Empty folders for each of the movies I was trying to copy and paste over the network were copied to the server (empty or folder with one jpeg inside).

Transfers over Gigabit network work well between PCs on network, but nothing works to server. Server is empty, so cannot try copy from server.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ramon

EDIT: Added syslog, as suggested

Thanks!

I'll take a quick guess that it's the onboard NIC. An Atheros chipset by any chance? If so the recommended solution I think is get a nice Intel NIC to replace it.

Do post the information requested by dgaschk, as I said it's only a guess given the information you have currently supplied.

Hi jamerson9,

Not Atheros, Realtek Gige I believe on both ends. But thanks. Maybe, once I get home and post syslog, you can help me figure out a fix for this. I've reached a wall.

Cheers,

This smells of a user share setup issue. One drive isn't showing as almost full by chance?

If you have your user share set to fill-up then try high water. You will also have to delete all the empty directories.

It could also be the split level. You would have to post both the share settings and a description of the folder structure you are using to store files to get help on this. Also, try reading through the shares section in the unofficial manual in the wiki for a better idea of how to set them up and what could be happening.

Hi Peter (lionelhutz),

I think you're most probably right. I struggled for a few days in setting user shares that seemed to work. Stress on 'seemed to'. But all drives show as virtually empty, as you'll see in the attached. Transfers in network between two Win 7 PCs is happening at 37-40 MB/Sec, and same Win 7 PCs to Server-Nada!!

So hardware doesn't seem to be the issue at Network and PC levels at least. I'll post share settings etc. in the next post. Maybe there's the problem, after all.

I used the manuals to try to set up my shares. but have to admit limited understanding of the unRAID way of doing shares.

Thanks,

Ramon

Hi,

Additional details that might help in troubleshooting, providing me some feedback- Thank you for just trying to help me find a fix.

- unRAID Pro 4.7 most recent version.

Network is still using a homegroup that I plan to get out of, MSHOME group. Intent is creating a new one just for media backups and streaming. I'm currently using an older D-Link Gigabit switch. My new HP 16 port switch arrived this morning HP Part# JD844A. That one is going in, in the next few days. Same w SSD cache drive-not yet connected.

On Shares-This is what I hoped for: 4 HDD for Media, from there, Disks 1, 2, and 4 for movies, and Disk 3 for Music. All disks but #4 are currently 2TB each.  Movies folder to span Disks 1,2 and 4. Individual movie folders in same disk. Movie folders not to be split. Thought to Keep t it simple since the unRAID share concept was new to me. All set as High-water, since I have enough Space and more HDD are on their way. I set up (or kept) 3 user accounts-root, admin, and one new one. All as (rw), and a guest account, hoping to be as read-only. Current user shares are: [Disk Shares SMB]-Export read and Write, Disk shares (NFS) Disk1, Disk2, Disk3, Disk 4.

Weird characters in syslog. Please run memtest overnight.

Weird characters in syslog. Please run memtest overnight.

Thanks dgaschk,

Now running memtest.

Forgot to mention-I'm still receiving an error message about non-inet addr for Disk 1 and Disk2.

My server is headless at the moment, thus never actually see the non-inet address error. When monitor is connected, I have done what I saw in another Post in the forum-just hitting Enter and normal boot login comes up. Otherwise login normally through web interface.

I Have no idea if this non-inet causes any of the Weird characters in syslog you mentioned.

Will report on memtest in the morning.

Thanks!

Ya, those odd characters sure look like you have a corruption issue of some sort.

Your shares look odd, what is "--[movie title*]" in the share list being used for?

Hi,

Thanks.

That  "--[movie title*]"  entry for a share was basically a Copy& Paste entry from one of the forum guides or examples about shares. It is supposed to be the Level 4 (?) split so my individual movie titles (movie Folders) are not split and all files within the particular movie's folder are kept in same folder. I still don't understand how to do the [Alien], [gone with the Wind], etc etc split levels so each movie stays in one disk and is not split without manually creating a share for each movie title. With over 700 movie titles in my collection plus the TV series, something I'd prefer not do do, so the  "--[movie title*]"  entry seemed as a good solution for the movies. Is it incorrect?

About the memtest - memtest86 V4.10 run for 08 Hours and 35+ minutes. By now pass 10. still Reporting 0 errors-

WallTime: 08:35+ Cached: 3838M, RsvdMem : 160K, MemMap: e820, Cache: on, ECC: off, Test: Std, Pass: 10, Errors, ECC error : 0

***Pass complete, no errors*** message on screen, and still running

Memory specs-2x2GB Kingston DDR3- 3838M 4926MB/S

RAM @ stock settings-Auto): 666MHz (DDR1333) / CAS: 9-9-9-24 / DDR3 (64 Bits)

For now, plan to exit memtest within the hour.

No solutions have yet been posted for the other users with the same non-inet address error message for some of the Disks, and I haven't done anything about it either. Could that be the source for the Weird characters in syslog, and my shares the source of my Drag&Drop problem?

Thank you,

Ramon

The wierd characters are indicating some type of corruption problem. I'm not sure what it is but I'll tell you that they should 100% not be there. You're going to have to do some troubleshooting until you get rid of this issue. It could be just about anything. Double check the ram voltage vs BIOS setting and also confirm you have a good power supply.

Your shares appear to be messed up. You don't create a share for each level you are storing. You create a share for the top level of what you are storing and then write to that share. The split level and allocation method dictate how the share is filled and what is allowed to split across multiple disks.

Peter

Apart from the possible memory problems (either bad memory or incorrect settings by default) you definitely have Atheros chipset for the on-board LAN:

Mar 10 17:52:34 Tower kernel: atl1c 0000:03:00.0: irq 27 for MSI/MSI-X

Mar 10 17:52:34 Tower kernel: atl1c 0000:03:00.0: atl1c: eth0 NIC Link is Up<1000 Mbps Full Duplex>

You will need to disable the on-board LAN and use one Intel or Realtek based add-on NIC.

Hi Peter,

Could you please point out which ones in particular are the characters you've found as weird in my syslog?

I've gone through your suggestions Re BIOS, Voltage, PSU, and all seems normal and within acceptable levels. PSU is a Seasonic 620Watt, one of the best in the market at that rating level. All components are brand new and top shelf (sans a few of the 2TB HDD, whch are a few months old, yet perfectly working pulls from my NAS I'm trying to supersede with this Server). I know how to build and test systems and hardware, but not unRAID.

Maybe if you help me identify the particular lines or entries with weirdness in characters, I can constructively troubleshoot. I am ready to take apart and restart the build, although for me no doubts persists on most of the hardware (though I did not update the Firmware on any of my HDD, all were precleared as suggested here).

OIn the software side, I have only used the system and patches available via Lime tech, and unMenu's offerings. Maybe something got corrupted upon download or install.  I haven't changed any scripts since I'm no Linux guru. All lights on the web interface persist green.

Thanks for the info. I will retry the shares.

I'd prefer to troubleshoot and fix this than to redo, and/or, go the Windows Home Server route. unRAID seems to have all I need and more.

If needed, I could start preclearing all drives again, and redo the whole shebang since it's still empty and at this stage it's just a very expensive brick sitting by my desk.

Thanks,

Ramon

So that is what that means. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll definitely need to take a crash course on syslog readout.

If Asus went cheapo on this board's NIC, no problems I'll buy an Intel NIC today and get it working soon. One less variable to contend with.

Thanks!

I missed seeing that network card in the log. Get the network card replaced and then see what happens.

Thanks Peter!

I see what you mean. I will definitely replace the NIC now. Just located a couple of Intel variants locally.

About the Weird characters in the log, I know there could be another variant to the exactness of the entries in that log-firefox (latest 3.6XXX iteration) did not display the syslog in a page as expected, when i went to the syslog "web address", so it was a capture that might not be exact. I will first try to capture a syslog using any of the other suggested methods including unMenu's tab for syslog, and see if those weird characters persists in there.

But, I believe you are both right, Step 1 is to replace the on board NIC w an Intel or similar NIC.

Hope you don't mind if I get back to this once the new NIC is in place.

Thanks again to you, Jamieson, and everyone else that was willing to help me with this at this early stage of troubleshooting my new rig.

No later than next Monday I should be back with new syslogs, etc.

Thanks,

Ramon

Hi,

Attached is a New Syslog file. Picked up via unMenu tab, without browser interference. In this one I did not see the Weird characters.

Will still pick up the new Intel NIC over the weekend, and continue troubleshooting. Please let me know if you see any useful information in the attached log file.

Thanks,

Ramon

I'm very sure it's the NIC. This is a common problem with the Atheros chipset.

It's got to be a newer model or revision. I have the Atheros chipset but it shows as atl1, not the atl1c, and it is fine.

Thanks Dgaschk,

After your initial post here about the atl1c entry in my syslog, I've been reading in the Forum about Atheros, and it seems that until unRAID V 5.04b is tested and released, best bet is to do what you've suggested and replace the NIC.  Local stockists seem to be low on physical stock of the Intel. Realtek (or an Intel server NIC<$$) might be the only on-hand choices. Otherwise, I will chase down the Intel NIC this weekend somehow.

Those two, Intel and Realtek, are mentioned by my local stockists among a list of NIC that goes from Netgear, D-Link to multiple generics, as well as server Intel NICs of all kinds. I'd prefer to buy what they have, not to wait a week or two for delivery, which was suggested already by a couple of local stores.

Thanks,

Ramon

Hi,

Did you see any other issues in my new syslog?

Cheers,

Ramon

I never even looked. If you obtain it by not using the network and it is clean without the funky characters then that points squarely to the network.

Hi Peter,

I agree, the network card is a culprit, and is next in line to fix. But is there anything there beyond Weird chacters and a NIC that doesn't work as expected?

It might be constructive to identify and eliminate any other issues w my unit.  Hopefully there's nothing else besides the network in there that needs attention. Just in case there is, would you mind having a look at the new syslog?

By now, we know I'll have to re-do my Shares once hardware issues are out of the way. And then try it out.

Would like to close the HW chapters for now, since my SSD and a couple more HDD will be part of this build very soon.

Thank you,

ramon
