[Solved] New server, GPU passthrough ok but the server does not start if HDMI cable is not connected

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I assembled a new server with the purpose of having it with a VM and Quadro P2000 passthrough for CAD. (Ryzen 3900X, 32GB of ram, Gigabyte Aorus x570 master, Quadro P2000, unraid 6.9.2)
Everything is set up and working but when I want to install the server in its place the server doesn't seems to be starting properly and I can't access it through the normal web UI.

After multiple tests, I'm sure now I can't access the server if it does not starts with HDMI cable connected on the TV (following my research it seems the DisplayPort could cause issues) via an adapter DisplayPort/HDMI. Problem is I don't have any screen to put on the server where it should be finally installed and there must be a parameter somewhere that fixes the issue, right?

Do anybody knows why it would do such thing, it is weird and I can't seem find a way to have it properly starting without using video output. What can I do to fix that?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Solved

Had this same issue as well, UnRAID server would not boot after having migrated to another Mainboard and not having a display connected.

In my place the problem was with the mainboard, expecting to have a display connected to boot past the POST screen. Didn't find any setting in the UEFI to fix this.

I bought myself a HDMI-dummy for 10 bucks which solved the problem. The mainboard thinks that a display is connected and boots correctly into UnRAID.

I will try that, Thanks.

I'll also look again in the UEFI just in case ;)

Problem solved as expected with the dummy HDMI thing.

Thanks!
